1900. PCGS graded Proof 63 Deep Cameo. A nice untoned deep cameo proof coin. The surfaces show just a few trivial signs of contact, keeping this hefty gold proof solidly in the choice category. Although the mintage was normal for this period, perhaps as many as half of those produced are no longer around for collectors, spent, lost or melted. Of those known, about one-tenth exhibit the desired Deep Cameo contrast as seen here. For the collector, studying a lovely deep cameo proof gold coin is a treat that will always be treasured. They are so dramatic, and capture all the elegance and finest ability of the Philadelphia Mint. Only 124 proofs minted. Pop 1; 1 in 64DC; 3 in 64+DC; 6 in 65DC. 1907. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-65. Just graded at PCGS for the first time. In the right obverse field is a small scuff; otherwise this coin would be MS66 or finer. Its unmarred surfaces are completely pure and bathed in mint frost. Presented here is a highly desirable example of this coveted issue, with the fullness of strike, majestic designs, and timeless beauty any collector would long appreciate. Rarely are these large, gold high reliefs found in gem condition today. The monumental struggle of the famed scultptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens is well documented, with his main support coming from President Theodore Roosevelt. Saint-Gaudens was battling a terminal disease while trying to get models, dies, and coins produced, and, when nearly finished, just weeks away from production, he passed away. These stunning High Relief double eagles are the closest production coins to his concept, and only a few lucky people can afford one this splendid. Make sure to view it before the sale and many times thereafter. Such beauty will never go out of style.

The surviving examples of this famed High Relief design generally fall into two main categories: lightly circulated, yet retaining AU quality, and the larger group of certified coins that offer grades of MS62 to MS64. Demand is always strong when a delightful, lustrous gem like this appears on the market. Truly an opportunity for the experienced collector (PCGS # 9135) Estimate Value $35,000 - 38,000

1907. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. A coin that should be graded MS65. The obverse wire edge is very sharp as the multiple strikes required to bring up the design elements pressed the planchet hard against the collar, causing this raised thin feature around the extreme edge of the coin. Lovely light golden colors with vibrant luster and three dimensional eye appeal. The stunning beauty of these High Relief coins cannot be overstated, their elegance in hand simply satisfies the numismatic senses in a way that no other coin can accomplish.

The dies used to strike these masterpieces show considerable depth in their devices, when the dies were secured in the largest coining press at the Philadelphia Mint, these coins still requireed up to seven strikes to fully bring up the design elements, bringing production to a veritable crawl. Needless to say the results were exceptional, but modern coinage could not be condemmed to such an arduous process of multiple strikes for each coin destined for circulation. Efficiency won out soon enough, and Saint-Gaudens masterpiece design was greatly reduced in depth, allowing for a single strike from the dies going forward to strike the 1907 double eagles in low relief (PCGS # 9135) Estimate Value $30,000 - 33,000

1907. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. PCGS graded MS-64. CAC. PQ. This coins should be regraded to MS-65. A wonderful coin that shows the full depth of the strength of the huge medal press that required multiple strikes to bring up the designs of these Saint-Gaudens masterpieces. The three dimensional effect required considerable metal to move into the dies to fill the huge wings on the eagle, Liberty's knee and all the fine nuances of the design. Studying a coin like this is a treat for the collector who can understand the mastery of this epic project to get these beautiful coins into production. Only 11,250 struck (PCGS # 9135) Estimate Value $30,000 - 33,000
