Lot 1936
1802, 2 over 1. NGC graded MS-63. Well struck and frosty. The obverse shows the bust of Liberty with her head facing right, date below and LIBERTY above, with stars separating the words and date. Liberty wears a cap, with her long curling hair flowing down, with one part of her hair wrapping up along the cap. The strike is sharp enough to keep all the hair strands separated, and all the fine definition is present. Matching quality on the reverse where the Great Seal is seen, with minor modifictaions to the clouds so they fit better onto the coin format. Again all elements are crisp and sharp, and the surfaces show no distracting disturbances. A glorious example of this prized type issue.Pop 15; 13 in 64;i in 65. (PCGS # 8083) Estimate Value $25,000 - 27,000

1803, 3 over 2. PCGS graded MS-61. Well struck and a nice example. Very clear overdate coin. Both sides offer clean surfaces with ample luster to please the eye. The reverse has attractive orange-gold hues. Scarce and popular as these early gold coins present a bargain compared with many more common issues of this era in United States coinage. Now would be a great time to start a collection of these historic and interesting pieces. Pop 20; Just graded for the first time. (PCGS # 8084) Estimate Value $10,000 - 11,000

The surfaces have scattered light marks when examined, but are quite attractive in hand. 1809, 9 over 8. PCGS graded MS-63+. Only 33,875 struck. Pop 2; 31 finer at PCGS. Boldly struck and mostly untoned with abundant mint frost on the devices and lustrous fields. Free of detracting adjustment marks. The surfaces are pleasing, with nary a nick or bagmark to be found anywhere. As such collector demand for this scarce type or date coin is always strong, especially when such a high grade, high appeal coin turns up. This is a fine example of the die engraving by John Reich, who was employed at the Philadelphia Mint starting in 1807. This elegant design of the half eagle was his craftmanship, with Liberty wearing a cap and having long, flowing curls. The eagle on the reverse is poised in a more natural stance, with wings outstretched. Reich was proud of his work, and it is believed he "signed" the dies he engraved with a small notch out of the outter point of the last star right of the date, as seen here. Other numismatists have noted the clasp on Liberty's dress has a cursive "R" at the center, probably another hidden signature by Reich. All in all, a nice looking coin (PCGS # 8104) Estimate Value $25,000 - 27,000

1809, 9 over 8. PCGS graded AU-58. Frosty and untoned with considerable brightness. A scarce issue, as not many of these were struck, and precious few survive today. The curls on Liberty and the star centers are crisp, as well as the tiny wing feathers on the reverse. A classic example of the popular John Reich style that was first launched in 1807. Pop 34; (PCGS # 8104) Estimate Value $9,000 - 9,500

1810. Large date, large 5. PCGS graded XF Detail. Ex Jewelry. Mostly untoned with good definition remaining. A good many of these early gold coins were worn as jewelry, otherwise that many more would have been lost to the melting pots of time. A lot of coin remains here to be studied (PCGS # 8108) Estimate Value $3,000 - UP

1842-C. Small date. PCGS graded Very Fine Details. Lightly toned and a nice looking coin. This is the rarests collectible Charlotte gold half eagle. They were probably struck first in the year, followed by the Large Date pieces. It is believed that 4,595 pieces were struck of which perhaps 110 exist today. Natually collector demand is quite high when one of these turns up. Modest wear on the high points, and the surfaces are smoother than often encountered. Always sought after and a scarce coin (PCGS # 8208) Estimate Value $5,500 - 6,000

Lot 1949
1847-C. NGC graded MS-62. Mostly untoned with strong mint luster throughout. The strike is boldl, with full sharp details on Liberty's curls and the eagle. The Charlotte Mint really got legs in 1847, as the mintage ticked off an entire 84,151 pieces. While this is modest for many more plentiful issues from other mints, for Charlotte, it was a lot more than in previous years. Hence this date is fairly available in circulated grades, but in mint state it is prohibitively rare. Only a few are known! Hence this sparkling and flashy MS-62 coin should be strongly cosidered if you are a specialist. Not many chance exist to obtain one! Pop 2; 1 finer in 63 (PCGS # 8223) Estimate Value $11,000 - 12,000
