1795. PCGS graded VF-30. CAC. Nice light silver gray toning on both sides. The surfaces are smooth and free of detracting marks, and the strike is sharp. Good curl defintion on Liberty, and the eagle shows much of the original feather definition on his wings. A solid representative of this important and challenging type coin. The vast majority of 1795 half dollars circulated down to grades of Very Good or lower, so a nice Very Fine coin like this is a real treat to examine and own (PCGS # 6052) Estimate Value $4,500 - 5,000

Lot 1445
1797. NGC graded AU-55. O-101a, Rarity-5. 15 Stars. This is a very attractive silver gray and steel blue toned with the classic look of "old silver". The strike is exceedingly sharp, including Liberty's lovelock before her ear, a feature that wears away quickly after limited circulation. Thus this is a testament to the high grade of the presnt offering. Furthermore, Liberty's drapery shows full separation right onto Liberty's shoulder. On even the highest grade specimens of 1797 and 1796 half dollars, this feature rarely shows., whereas on the present specimen these drapery lines are sharp and clearly separated. Also the eagle's eye is clear when studied. Nicely toned on both sides. Important silver type coin. Pop 1; 6 finer.

The key date Bust half dollar and the rarest half dollar Type in the entire U.S. series. The Mint's Draped Bust was combined with the Small Eagle reverse only in 1796-7 before the Heraldic Eagle reverse was adopted (dimes in 1798, half dollars in 1801 when next produced). There were no half dollars struck from 1798 to 1800. The tiny mintage tells the story once more since the total struck has been recorded as 2,984 pieces.

Extensive die cracks on the reverse. In addition to the small crack from the edge through O of OF, a new crack develops from the edge between DS and across the left wing. Another from the edge through the first T in STATES to eagle's head and in its final states (as here) becomes a mass of die cracks. Interesting and educational to the student of die progression. Amato coin serial # 410. Estimate Value $100,000 - 115,000

1806. NGC graded MS-64. Nicely toned on both sides with classic antique silver hues. The strike is sharp, with all of Liberty's curls present and boldly defined, the reverse to shows strong shield lines and feather details on the eagle. A rare type issue this well preserved, as most known examples fall well short of the nearly pristine quality and regal appeal of the present coin. The reverse sports interesting die cracks, one splits the O in OF, another from the rim up through the left claw (facing) of the eagle into the arrows, another meanders through the peripheral legends. A desirable coin in every way. Pop 24; 4 in 65; 2 in 66;. Estimate Value $18,000 - 20,000

1846. Medium date. PCGS graded Proof 63. Toned with dusky golden gray shades and antique silver on both sides. The strike is incredible, with deep defintion unheard of and unseen on business strikes of this era. Boldly reflective fields, right down to the the tiny space between the shield lines. About 10-15 known, and this Choice example lies about in the middle of the known examples in terms of quality. It would be hard to imagine a collection of these early Proof Liberty Seated half dollars, but it can be done with patience and a few decades of unceasing effort. One pops up here and there, and a serious specialist has to be ready to buy. But, what a collection it forms! Each coin a significant rarity, mintages in the 3 to 20 pieces for those dates of the 1840s, how sweet is that? Here is a coin that would make a good start at this challenging series. Lot 1470
1853. Arrows and Rays. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. CAC. Mostly untoned and frosty. A lovely type coin that displays classic satiny-gold and gray toning on both sides over lustrous surfaces. As the Gold Rush unfolded in California in 1849-53, the price of silver rose due to the abundance of gold coming to market. The situation became so dire that silver coins were being gathererd up and melted for a profit. Congress finally acted in early 1853, reducing the silver content in the coins from the half dime to half dollar (the dollar standard left alone for traditions sake). As most silver coins had disappeared from circulation, the need for lighter weight coins was tremendous. The Arrows coinage of 1853 was struck in great numbers, but few were saved in high grades like the present offering. Most were spent and entered circulation and stayed for many years. Thus finding a near gem like this is a real pleasure! Pop 213; 35 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 6275) Estimate Value $4,500 - 5,000

1859-O. NGC graded MS-65+. Pop 3; 3 finer in 66. Lovely blue and golden toning on both sides which greatly adds to the eye appeal. Furthermore the surfaces are rock solid gem with nary a nick or bagmark to be found. This is incredible considering that this coin was issued just prior to the Civil War, and issued down in the South. How did it survive at all, let alone in gem condition?
