Lot 1302
1796 Draped Bust Dime JR-6. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck with lovely light natural toning on both sides, Nice reflective surfaces on both sides. A lovely first year type coin that was only struck in 1796 and 1797. The obverse depicts Liberty facing right with her long flowing curls. The reverse shows a small eagle perched on some clouds, surrounded by a wreath. While a number of these were saved as the first of their kind, locating a high end coin like this always requires some patience. Thin die cracks are noted when carefully examined, all as struck. An important offering for the advanced specialist who needs an example of this type. Pop 22; 19 finer at NGC. Estimate Value $40,000 - 45,000

1797. 16 stars. PCGS graded MS-62. Only 25,261 struck. Pop 4; 4 finer, 1 in 64, 1 in 65, 2 in 66. Nicely toned on both sides. Lots of luster visable and this is a truly rare issue in Mint State today. Precious few of the 1797 dime production wre saved at all, especially in Mint State. Here is one of the few that stands tall above the average, the circulated and the typical. If you require something amazing, extraordinary, then here is the coin for you (PCGS # 4462) Estimate Value $30,000 - 35,000

1803. NGC graded MS-61. Jrr-3., Rarity-4. Only 33,040 struck. Pop 1; 1 finer in 63. Deep blue toning on both sides. This is an extraordinary coin as there are no more than four or five 1803 dimes that can claim Mnt State condition. These simply didn't survive without entering circulation. The strike is decent for this issue, with minor softness on the B of LIBERTY (opposite the eagle's tail), and a few other localized areas. Liberty's curls are generally sharp, as ewll as the definition on the eagle. An early die state for this variety.

Draped Bust dimes are one of the toughest series to collect. Nice examples of most dates are quite sparse, and assembling a high grade collection takes considerable patience. An important offering for the advanced numismatist who appreciates quality and eye appeal. Estimate Value $40,000 - UP

1805. 4 berries. PCGS graded MS-66. Pop 5; 2 in 66+, 3 in 67. A frosty white coin. Light adjustment marks on both sides made by the mint. A wonderful type coin that offers a bold strike, super clean surfaces and glowing mint luster. The fields are amazing, they are virtually untouched by contact with other coins. Without question, one of the most difficult design types to find in gem or finer grades is the Draped Bust coinage. First off, these were generally struck during the first 15 years of operation of the Mint, at a time when few people had the wherewithal to save such trinkets. Coins from many nations were in circulation in the United States at that time, and most transactions were done by weighing known coins in order to properly account for their value. Hence, so few Draped Bust coins were saved, and given the 200 plus years since they were struck, every chance for mishandling has taken a mighty toll on those that were saved. This fabulous 1805 dime is one of the very finest to exist today. Totally white with a couple of hints of pale gold near the rims. A fantastic coin for the advanced collector (PCGS # 4477) Estimate Value $50,000 - UP

1807. JR-1, Rarity 2. PCGS graded MS-65. A lovely well struck coin that shows elegant light gold toning in areas with much deeper blue and russet accents around the rims. The strike is sharper than commonly seen for this date. A few minor nicks and thin adjustment marks are present when closely examined. An important example for the type specialist, as downright few exist in gem condtion of these Draped Bust coins of any denomination. Pop 4; 1 finer in 66 for the variety at PCGS. (PCGS # 38770) Estimate Value $25,000 - 30,000

1814. Large date. PCGS graded MS-64. JR-3, Rarity-2. Nicely toned on both sides, and struck from lightly cracked dies. These cracks account for areas of softness in the strike, seen when closely examined. 1814 dimes are elusive this close to the gem grade level. Expect competition when this one comes up for sale. Pop 29; 14 finer, 2 in 64+, 6 in 65, 1 in 65+, 5 in 66. (PCGS # 4488) Estimate Value $3,000 - 3,200

1827. PCGS graded MS-65. JR-12. Pop 15; 4 finer, 2 in 65+, 2 in 66. Lovely golden toning on both sides and boldly struck. Where this coin really stands out is the quality of the surfaces. First off, its a gem, a condition rarity for any large sized Capped Bust dime. There are only a modest number of these early silver in gem or finer grades, for the 1827 dimes the numbers are noted. Liberty's curls are well struck, along with the surrounding stars. The eagle too is sharp and well defined on the tiny feathers of his outstretched wings. Luster is visable peering out from the antique layer of gold toning. A stunning example of this tough date in phenomenal condition (PCGS # 4504) Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000

1937 Lg Date. No Stars. PCGS graded Proof 63 PQ. CAC. Boldly struck with lovely well matched blue toning on both sides. Very popular coin as this is a short lived type, with the No Stars obverse seen only in late 1837 until the opening months of 1838. Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht adopted Thomas Sully's design of Liberty seated on a rock and holding a pole with the cap of freedom at the top. The reverse design was a simple open laurel wreath with fruit, ONE / DIME at the center, and surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. To celebrate this new design perhaps 30 were struck in Proof, and this is one of those prized examples. 25 to 30 known in proof. Pop 7; 8 in 64; 3 in 65; 1 in 66. The toning accents the devices. This is the first year of issue with the stars included on the Liberty Seated obverse design, and thus an important type issue (PCGS # 4568) Estimate Value $1,900 - 2,000

1842-O. NGC graded MS-65. Frosty and evenly toned with soft gray and silver surfaces and a dash of gold. A condition rarity at the gem grade level, unsurpassed by either grading service and a powerful coin to represent this issue. The vast majority of these entered circulation and stayed there for decades, today they are in far lower grades than seen here. Somehow this amazing coin was set aside, and not touched for generations! This condition rarity says it all, this is a simply extraordinary coin. Don't miss out. Pop 3; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimate Value $12,000 - 13,000

1853. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. CAC. A frosty, white gem that is fully struck, with a crisp, clear appearance. A great looking type coin with slight rose toning on the reverse. A signifigance to the arrows flanking the date, as they mark the reduction of silver in planchets that were becoming more valuable than the official stated value of ten cents. The proportionate metallic change lessened the weight of the coin by seven percent. This exceptional grade is elusive and should command a commeasurately high bid reflecting its desireability. Pop 39; 3 in 66+; 16 in 67; 3 in 68; 1 in 68+. (PCGS # 4603) Estimate Value $3,000 - 3,300

1855. NGC graded MS-68. Boldly struck on each and every device, the field are satin smooth and offer some contrast with the frosty letters and devices. There is notoning beyond a hint of gold on this frosty white gem. In early 1853, the amount of silver bullion was slightly reduced to bring the planchet values back below the melt value on our silver coinage (other than the silver dollar, for traditions sake). A large quantity of old tenor coins were melted down and silver bullion was available, so the mint really cranked up the presses in 1853 when the reduced weight planchets became available. The mass meltings of silver coins stopped with these new "Arrows" coins that were enough lighter in wieght to make any potential profit disappear. Here is a stunning example from 1855. Pop 2; tied for the finest graded. Estimate Value $14,000 - UP

The strike is precise and full, as required for a proof. Surface quality is outstanding, and the eye appeal is strong. Add to all these fine attributes the Cameo contrast and you have a fantastic example of this early and rare proof issue. Pop 5; 1 in PF68Cam;. Estimate Value $12,000 - 14,000

1858. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo PQ. CAC. Around 300 proofs issued. Boldly struck and mostly untoned. Less than 70 known in proof today. Among the finest known today from this elusive and popular issue. The stars and Miss Liberty's hair are very sharp. PCGS has not graded any coins of this date and denomination in the Deep Cameo category, making this lovely Cameo coin one of the finest seen. Proof coin production was starting to take off in the late 1850s, due to growing collector demand. Things slowed down considerably during the Civil War (1861 to 1865) with many denomations showing mintages of below 500 pieces. Today these issues are highly collectible and many are quite rare.
