Lot 1261
1795. PCGS graded MS-64. Boldly struck with nice old time toning that ranges from royal blue at the edge to lighter silver at the centers. The strike is generally sharp for this important type coin, with full flowing curls on Liberty, and the eagle's wing feathers show abudant definition. This is an important type coin, issued only in two short years, 1794 and 1795. The Flowing Hair design was retired at the end of 1795 and the Draped Bust style was adopted as 1795 drew to a close. In fact, one obverse die of the new style was prepared and dated 1795, but not used for coinage. In early 1796, that obverse was overdated with a 6 over the 5 and producion of the new style began. Hence this Flowing Hair coin is a tough issue to locate in high grades, and is in constant strong demand. Exceptional preservation, with unending eye appeal. Pop 34; 36 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 4251) Estimate Value $19,000 - 20,000

1795. NGC graded EF-40. LM-5, Rarity-6. Light grey toning on both sides and attractive. The dies show bold evidence of clashing, with traces of the eagle and wreath present in the obverse fields. A tough die pairing which is seldom offered. The reverse die shows a thin die crack from the rim past the D of UNITED to the eagles wing. Moderate adjustment marks on the eagle's breast and wing to the rim are also found on the reverse. Somewhat rough surfaces. Housed in an Old Style Holder. Only 86,416 struck. Estimate Value $4,000 - 4,400

1795. PCGS graded AU Details. Cleaned. LM-3. Nicely toned with russet gold on both sides, which accents the devices. An interesting coin with a thin die crack down Liberty's head. Free of handling issues and just a trace of adjutment marks are noted on the reverse rim and a couple on the eagle's breast. Still a nice looking type coin and one that is hard to find in high grades (PCGS # 38587) Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1800. NGC graded MS-64. Boldly struck on all the devices, particularly on Liberty's head and hair, as well as the eagle's wings. There is a small die flaw below the date (as struck), and a tiny edge flaw in the planchet between stars four and five on the obverse, which will serve to hallmark this important coin. Both sides offer lovely toning which is a feast for the eyes with antique russet and blue shades. 1831. PCGS graded MS-67. CAC. Nice blue and gold toning on the obverse, a bit less on the reverse. Incredible eye appeal and quality, the surfaces are alive with mint luster, and bathed in alluring toning. Although these tiny coins are impressive, rarely--in fact almost never--are they found so perfectly preserved! The surfaces are pristine, with no distracting handling marks or issues that are so commonly seen on these early silver coins. The strike is sharp throughout. It's certainly quite a special coin to earn the MS-67 moniker from PCGS, but then to get the CAC approval as well speaks volumes of the stunning quality offered here. A prize for the advanced type specialist. Pop 10; 2 finer, 1 in 67+, 1 in 68. (PCGS # 4278) Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000

1833. PCGS graded MS-67. LM-4.2. This is an amazing coin, first off the glorious frosty central details of Liberty are bright silver, with flecks of russet and blue toning accenting her hair curls as well as the letters of LIBERTY in her cap. The surrounding stars are offset by bright centers, surrounded by deepening blue and russet shades. Matching toning on the reverse, which closely follows the obverse shades. Sharply struck by the dies, and impressive quality just for the eye appeal alone, add to this the fantastic quality of the surfaces and you have an incredible, virtually unbeatable, combination. Tied with a select dozen as one of the finest seen by PCGS, topped only by a single example with the "+" grade at this level. An opportunity for the type or date specialist. Pop 12; 1 in 67+. 1837. No stars, small date. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck with light golden toning on both sides. A pleasing type coin with all the hallmarks desired by collectors; eye appeal, rarity and a proven track record. These tiny half dimes were the first appearance of the new Gobrecht design for this denomination, and they proved quite popular. Stars were added to the obverse design the follwing year, so this 1837 style became a very short-lived type coin. And a handsome example it is! Pop 35; 24 finer at PCGS. 1852-O. NGC graded MS-66. Light blue toning. with golden accents. The strike is typical for this scarce issue, with minor softness on Liberty's head and curls as well as a few stars. The area opposite of her head on the reverse is also a bit softly struck. Notice the interesting die crack on the obverse where the first star is split and the crack enters Liberty's arm and extends up along her arm toward her shoulder. During 1852 recall that the value of silver bullion had risen above the face value of our coinage. This was largely due to the huge gold discoveries in California. Hence it was profitable to melt silver coins, and many apparently were melted. Although the stated mintage is 260,000 it is believed a many of these were later melted by the mint, and coined into lower standard silver coinage once the bullion requirements were reduced in early 1853. Gems of the 1852-O half dime have long been known to be historic rarities. Pop 2; tied for the finest example graded at both services. Estimate Value $8,000 - 9,000
