Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1209
1867. Rays. NGC graded MS-66. A nice white coin which displays strong luster, a sharp strike and clean surfaces. The Rays style only lasted from the first issue in 1866 into the first few months of 1867, when the Rays were removed from subsequent dies as being too hard to strike up on the copper-nickel alloyed planchets. The nickel was so much harder than copper, that even with a scant 25% of the planchet being nickel, it required more force to strike up the designs, furthermore these harder planchets (than copper, silver or gold) tended to crack and break the dies quickly. Hence the Rays had to go, as they complicated the design. Pop 12; 3 finer; 1 in 66PL; 1 in 66; 1 in 67. Estimate Value $6,000 - 6,500

1918-D, 8 over 7. PCGS graded EF-40. Very clear overdate. This is much tougher to find than many collectors realize. The total graded between the grading services is not all that many coins. If you have been seeking a high grade example of this bold overdate, then here is the coin for you. Popular key date (PCGS # 3939) Estimate Value $6,000 - 6,500

1920-S. PCGS graded MS-65. Pop 26; 2 finer, 1 in 65+, 1 in 66. Lovely toning on both sides of antique tawny gold blended with hints of nickel blue. The strike is somewhat soft, as typically seen for any 1920-S nickel, but the luster is complete and close scrutiny of the surfaces finds how incredibly clean and mark-free they are. Needless to say, this is a rare date and mint in the gem grade range, and collectors far and wide fight over coins like this when they appear (PCGS # 3946) Estimate Value $11,000 - 12,000
