Small Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1123
1856. PCGS graded Proof 64. CAC. PQ. Boldly struck. Beautiful toning and certainly better than the assigned grade. These rare Flying Eagle cents of 1856 were struck along with the old style Large Cents as an experiment to see if a greatly reduced size cent would find acceptance. For years people had complained about the large, heavy cents in circulation, and these new much smaller "cents" were an instant sucess. When the Flying Eagle cents were formally released in 1857, people lined up to buy as many as they could. The 1856 initial issue has found immense popularity since that time, with its tiny mintage and revolutionary designs. Only 1,500 struck. Pop 216; 68 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 2037) Estimate Value $20,000 - 22,000

Lot 1124
1856. PCGS graded Proof. AU Details. Scratch. While the scratch is on the obverse, that makes this example a lot more affordable for most collectors. The mintage is around 1,500 pieces for the year, and demand has always been strong when these turn up at auction or for sale. The eagle's feathers show bold definition, and the color is a natural light tan with reflective surfaces. Popular key date. Nicely toned (PCGS # 2037) Estimate Value $9,000 - 9,500

Lot 1126
1859. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Well struck with lovely light even toning on both sides. A rare single year type coin, especially so in gem proof. The obverse design continued through the end of the series with minor modification until 1909. These included the postioning of Liberty's head and of course the planchet composition, which included a 12 percent nickel alloy along with 88 percent copper, even this modest amount of nickel gave these cents a whitish hue in color. In 1864, the nickel portion was removed, and planchets were changed to a French bronze blend of 95 perccent copper, 5 percent tin and zinc.

For the reverse, there is an open wreath, with no shield at the top. This feature was changed in 1860 to include a small shield at the top of the wreath, creating a single year type coin for the 1859 Indian cent. An important offering for the type or date specialist. Pop 7; 5 in 66CAM; 1 in 67CAM. Estimate Value $4,000 - 4,500
