$1.00 June 25, 1855, Central Bank of Tennessee, Nashville, TN. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. Whitman-720-001-G010a, Haxby 140-G2a, Garland-918. This piece is unremarkable, except that it bears a curious stylized overstamp on the back of a chicken or similar bird. This is the only bank for which this cataloger has seen this overstamp, which was presumably added by the bank on some of its notes to deter counterfeiters. While the host note itself is quite common, this is only the fourth example of this overprint that this cataloger has seen in more than three decades. While undoubtedly there are other survivors, it is certain that no more than a handful of examples are still in existence. The note has a hinge repaired internal tear near the left end, and some mounting remnants on the back. Estimate Value $100 - 150
From the Ora Eads Collection.

Cr. 7, $20 March 2, 1872. State of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66EPQ. A pretty Gem example of the Revenue Bond Scrip issue of 1872, which was printed with the intention to relieve the state of its guarantee of the bonds of the Blue Ridge Railroad Company. The state legislature acted to prevent these notes from being placed into circulation when it was discovered that the corrupt Reconstruction-era state covernment had apparently duplicated the order of these notes from the American Bank Note Company, resulting in $5 million in notes being shipped--once to the governor and once to the state treasurer. Estimate Value $75 - 100

This is an attractive high grade example of an issue that is popular both for the Spanish reales coins pictured on the face, and for it being printed by J. Manouvrier of New Orleans, who also printed the Confederate States $5 T-12 issue. This note has a couple of mounting remnants on the unprinted back, otherwise it is nearly flawless in appearance.   Bank of Nashville Overstamps on South Carolina and Georgia Banknotes. In the 1850s, the Bank of Nashville acted as an agent, corresponding bank, and even a clearinghouse for several banks from other Southeastern states. Many banknotes from Georgia and South Carolina were as common in circulation in Tennessee as those from Tennessee banks, and so counterstamps from the Bank of Nashville are occasionally seen on these notes. All four examples here are graded by PCGS Currency, and include: $5.00 July 1, 1852, Bank of Augusta, GA (G-812, W-110-005-G180, Haxby 30-G66), Fine 12 Apparent, CC cancelled, damage in LL corner, small rust stain and hole near center; $10.00 July 4, 1850, Bank of Augusta, GA (G-812, W-110-010-G240, Haxby 30-G84), Fair 2 Apparent, CC cancelled, splits, tears, and damage; $5.00 Aug. 30, 1853, Farmers & Exchange Bank, Charleston, SC (G-815, W-110-005-G010a, Haxby 15-G2a), Very Good 10 Apparent, edge damage, small rust stains; and a $5.00 Nov. 29, 1853, Exchange Bank of Columbia, SC (G-814, W-250-005-G010b), Fine 12 Apparent, small edge tears, minor stains.   Wesley Wheless Overstamps on Bank of August Notes. Wesley Wheless was a Tennessee merchent who was in the banking business with his father-in-law Nicholas Hobson, owned the Bank of Nashville, and was an agent for several other banks. He died at the early age of 37, when he took his family to Liverpool, England and developed a fever while there which killed him. According to family legend, his wife, Susan Hobson Wheless, had his body hidden in a piano box packed with salt, stowed in the hold of the ship, and transported back with the family to America. Since civil war had just broken out in the U.S., this was undoubtedly a voyage undertaken with some risk of peril.

These four notes, all on the Bank of Augusta, GA, carry overstamps of Wesley Wheless as agent. Each is also graded by PCGS Currency: $5.00 May 1, 1849 (G-1069, W-110-005-G190, Haxby 30-G68), Good 4, CC cancelled; $10.00 May 1, 1849 (G-1069, W-110-010-G230, Haxby 30-G82), Fine 15 Apparent, CC cancelled, edge damage, rust stains, minor ink erosion; $20.00 Sept. 3, 1836 (G-1069, W-110-020-G280, Haxby 30-G96), Very Good 8 Apparent, CC cancelled, edge damage and tears, partial postage stamp affixed to back; and a $20.00 July 4, 1850 (G-1069, W-110-020-G290, Haxby 30-G98), Fine 12 Apparent, CC cancelled, edge splits, tears, and damage, stains, pinholes.
