Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 201
1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap AG3. Perhaps a point sharper but the fields and protected areas are covered with very fine granularity while the highpoints are smooth. No verdigris except for a small patch of very shallow crud in the center of the reverse. Rather glossy dark chocolate brown and olive with lighter chocolate and steel brown toning on the highpoints. The date is complete and easily readable although not strong and most of the legends remain visible. Essentially just a well-worn 1793 Liberty Cap Cent. Estimate Value $2,250 - UP

Lot 202
1793 S-18a R6 Head and Edge of 1793 Fair-2. The obverse is a bit sharper than the reverse, which is normal for lower grade examples of the variety. Most of the planchet is smooth and glossy and the toning is an attractive light to medium brown, but there are some shallow pits on both sides, especially in the field off the forehead. Some if not most of these "pits" may be planchet voids that were present at the time of striking, but they still catch your eye. No verdigris or notable contact marks, but the 4 in the date was carefully tooled into a "3" in an attempt to pass this piece off as a 1793 Liberty Cap Cent. The edge lettering is complete and strong, and the down-turned leaf following DOLLAR is bold. Listed as Fair-2 in the Noyes and Bland census rankings, Noyes photo #27958. An acceptable example of this very rare variety in spite of the defects. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP

1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793, Edge of 1794 G5. Sharpness VG10 but there are some pits on both sides, mostly around the bust tip and top of the reverse. These pits contain traces of greenish verdigris. Most of the planchet is relatively smooth and the toning is a slightly glossy medium chocolate brown and steel blending to darker olive brown in some of the protected areas. The date is complete and most of the legends are clear as well. MDS, before any swelling in the field below the cap. Estimate Value $300 - UP

1794 S-22 R1 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Glossy tan and golden brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and puffs of darker steel brown toning on the reverse. Frosty luster shows in the fields and protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable marks are a pair of nicks high on the cheek and a small planchet chip on the rim at the first A in AMERICA (as struck). M-LDS, Breen state VII. A fine die crack reaches from the rim through the 4 to the truncation but goes no farther and the "Mounds" on the reverse are well advanced. Called EF45 net EF40 Average Plus and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #34041. Our grade is EF45. This variety, while relatively common, is unknown in true Mint State by EAC standards. This is certainly one of the better ones, and it comes with an important provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at both services for the variety. (PCGS # 35531) Estimate Value $17,500 - UP

None of these defects is distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Frosty light olive and chocolate brown.
