1809/6 C-5 R1 Overdate 9 over 6 or Inverted 9 NGC graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous steel brown and chocolate with peeps of golden tan in a few of the protected areas. Most of the planchet is lustrous and quite attractive, but there is some extremely fine roughness at stars 11-13 into the lowest curls, and the toning in that area is slightly darker. No marks or other defects. LDS, Manley state 3.0. The undertype 6 (or inverted 9) is still clearly visible. Our grade is MS60. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP

1809 C-6 R1 F12. Slightly sharper with a few minor contact marks, including a couple light ones on the jaw and neck and a pair of nicks at the top of the second T in STATES. Rather glossy dark olive brown and steel. Double struck. The first strike was normal and centered on the planchet, but it failed to eject completely and was struck a second time 95% off center creating a tab at stars 3-6. The obverse tab contains dentils from the die, but the reverse was pinched against a blank planchet (the one for which this strike was intended), and the pinch left a strong beveled indent on that side of the tab. M-LDS, Manley state 5.0. The reverse is rotated 140 degrees CCW. A great mint error that comes with a nice provenance. Estimate Value $350 - UP
