Lot 1
1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling Noe-3 R6 PCGS graded AU50, CAC Approved. PCGS graded AU-50. Variety with ANDO following ENGLAND. Glossy light silvery gray and steel. The toning is a bit lighter on the devices than in the protected areas, thereby accenting the devices and adding to the eye appeal. The Oak Tree and date are both strong. The only mark is a dull dent on the A in ANDO, and this mark was strong enough to create a small lump at the opposing spot right of the Oak Tree. The obverse (tree side) is off center to K-2, as always on this variety, and some of the legend is off the planchet. The reverse is more centered on the planchet and those legends are complete, although the DO in ADNO is weak, as always in this die marriage. A nice example of this very rare variety. Weight shown on the PCGS label is 70.36 grains. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." PCGS population 1; finer of 2 graded at PCGS, the other is VF30. (PCGS # 45363) Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

Lot 2
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-8 R4 Large Planchet PCGS VF Details, Plugged. A Large Planchet type without Pellets at the tree trunk and a Ligatured NE in the legend. A smooth, glossy piece with VF30 details, but there is an obvious plug at the final S in MASATHVSETS. The legends are complete and clear except for weakness at NEW. EDS before the die cracks and cud breaks usually found on this variety. In addition there is obvious undertype behind the date, and this feature is present on most of the early die state strikes from this die pair. Perhaps a more skillful plugging would help this otherwise very nice example of our famous Large Planchet Pine Tree Shilling. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight listed as 66.5 grains on the PCGS label (PCGS # 23) Estimate Value $1,000 - UP

Lot 3
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-10 R3 PCGS graded AU55, CAC Approved. PCGS graded AU-55. A Large Planchet variety with two Backwards N's in the legend and without Pellets on either side of the tree trunk. Glossy medium gray and steel. The planchet is smooth and the designs are nicely centered on both sides leaving only the tops of a few letters tight to the edge. The date and Pine Tree are both strong, and both of the Backwards N's are clear (IN on the obverse and the second N in ENGLAND on the reverse). The only defect is a thin mint-made planchet fissure at the bottom, and the fissure does not affect any of the legend. A premium example of a classic American Colonial type and it comes with an excellent provenance that has been traced back for more than 100 years. Weight shown as 71.60 grains on the PCGS Secure label. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." PCGS population 1; 6 of the type in unc at PCGS. (PCGS # 45370) Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
