1794 C-1a R3 Large Edge Letters NGC graded MS63 Brown. Choice frosty uniform medium chocolate brown and steel. Sharply struck with smooth, nearly mark-free surfaces. The only notable defects are a tiny nick-like planchet chip over the 1 in the date, a dull scratch left of the F in OF, and a light scratch left of the denominator. None of these marks is at all distracting and this piece offers outstanding eye appeal. LDS, Manley state 3.0, showing obvious die clashmarks on both sides. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees CCW. Our grade is AU50. A beautiful 1794 half cent. NGC population 2; tied for finest MSBN of the variety. Estimate Value $25,000 - UP

1794 C-2a R2+ Small Edge Letters PCGS graded XF45. Choice glossy olive brown and chocolate. Smooth and very attractive, virtually perfect for the grade. Finding any identifying marks presents quite a challenge; a barely visible rim nick above the lower end of the pole and an equally insignificant rim bruise left of the top of the cap will have to suffice for this purpose. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0, showing strong die clashmarks before the portrait. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees clockwise. A really nice example of this relatively common die variety. Noyes photo #73613. Weight 111.5 grains. Our grade is VF30. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Sharply struck EDS, Manley state 1.0, a rare die state that has no die clashmarks before the neck. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW. Weight 98.9 grains. Our grade is VF25+. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable marks are a small splash of reddish chocolate toning under the 94, a small rim nick at the end of the pole, and a shallow low spot (incomplete planchet) at the top of EN in CENT. Very close to VG10. The date and legends are strong except for weakness at E in CENT thanks to the low spot in the planchet. The Large Edge Letters are complete and clear. EDS, Manley state 1.0, without any die clashmarks on the obverse. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW. A nice example of a very important variety that is missing from most advanced collections, tied for CC#5 in the Mike Spurlock census. Noyes photo #73664. Weight 100.1 grains. Our grade is VG8+. 1794 C-5a R4+ Small Edge Letters PCGS graded VF35. Slightly glossy olive brown and chocolate. The surfaces appear smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals extremely fine granularity in the fields and protected areas on both sides. No verdigris, and the only notable mark is a short scratch that is perfectly blended into the toning on the cap. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The dies are unclashed and the reverse rotated 70 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. The obverse is slightly misaligned to the upper left but the reverse is properly centered on the planchet. The date and legends are all strong. A nice example that is at the lower end of the condition census for this tough die variety. Our grade is net VF20+. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1794 C-5a R4+ Small Edge Letters PCGS VF Details, Environmental Damage. Rather glossy dark olive with light chocolate brown toning covering the highpoints. Extremely fine granularity covers the fields and protected areas on both sides, strongest on the reverse. No verdigris or notable marks other than a minor planchet clip (as struck) affecting the dentils over the top of the cap. The two-tone appearance is attractive and the contrast accents the devices and legends. The date and legends are complete and strong, and the eye appeal is nice in spite of the imperfect surfaces. Rare LDS, Manley state 2.0, showing strong die clashmarks around the portrait. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW from a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Our grade is F15+ sharpness net F12. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive. No verdigris, and the only contact mark is a rim nick left of the cap. The date is clear and most of the legends remain readable in spite of the roughness. 1794 C-7 R5+ PCGS graded F15. Glossy light olive and chocolate with some lighter brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. No corrosion or verdigris, only microscopic ticks scattered over both sides. The best identifying marks are a very small nick in the field off the tip of the nose and a tiny puff of darker chocolate toning at the left end of the fraction bar. Neither mark is at all significant and the eye appeal of this piece is excellent, especially for a variety that is very difficult to find without significant surface problems. MDS, Manley state 2.0. The radial die crack from the rim through the right side of the E in UNITED to the wreath is obvious and the reverse is rotated 10-15 degrees CCW. The date is bold and the legends are clear. 1794 C-8 R5 PCGS graded F15. Glossy light to medium brown and light olive. Smooth and attractive but there are some light rim bruises on both sides, none distracting but too many to ignore. A rim bruise over ER in LIBERTY and another at ICA can help identify this piece. Otherwise the surfaces are void of any notable marks or traces of roughness. MDS Manley state 2.0 early. The die crack from the dentils to the top of the second T in STATES is light and it does not extend down from the base of that T to the wreath. The date is bold and the legends are clear except for the usual strike weakness on the C in CENT. No verdigris. The only marks are some fine hairline scratches hidden in the toning on both sides. The only mark visible without the aid of a good glass is a scratch from the rim through the L in LIBERTY to the hair near the cap. LDS, Manley state 3.0, with HALF CENT weakly struck (as usual) and bulges at AMER. A curved planchet clip reaches just inside the dentils over TY and to the right and above the opposing ICA. Struck on a thin plain edge planchet that weighs only 66.0 grains versus the thin planchet standard of 84.0 grains, but the mint clip error has to account for some of the difference. A small chip on the center of the neck, a collection of fine horizontal scratches in the field before the face, and a tiny dig near the dentils before the chin are the notable marks. MDS, Manley state 2.0, with a dull wave from the chin to the rim. The date is bold and the legends are clear except for the usual weakness on parts of HALF CENT. The edge lettering is complete except for those parts of the letters that are too tall to fit on the edge of the thin planchet. Our grade is F12 sharpness net VG8+. A decent example of the very popular Lettered Edge version of the Low Head type. Weight 79.7 grains. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Only 3 of the variety graded at PCGS. Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
