Lot 381
1808 S-277 R2 PCGS graded AU55. Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown with traces of lighter golden tan in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable marks are on the unstruck portion of the planchet. A collection of planchet chips or voids on the unstruck edge at the bottom of the reverse are the only notable marks. E-MDS, Breen state IV, with a die crack through the D in UNITED and clear die clashmarks on both sides. Struck 30% off center to K-5 leaving the date off the planchet (but the die cracks on the reverse are all you need to easily attribute the date and die variety). One of the best examples of this type of mint error on a Classic Head Cent (1808-1814) we have seen. Our grade is EF40. The attribution, 30% Off Center feature, and March Wells provenance are all noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $5,000 - UP

1809 S-280 R2 AU50 PCGS Graded AU53. Sharpness very close to mint state but there is a bit of extremely fine roughness at the top of the head. This roughness is so minor that it is mostly lost in the radial flowlines, and the eye appeal is really nice. No verdigris, and the only marks are a shallow planchet flake over the front edge of the head and a small rim nick off the tip of the wreath ribbon. Lustrous medium chocolate brown and steel. This cent has solid mint state eye appeal. M-LDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks at the top of the reverse. Our grade is AU50. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 8 finer for the variety. Estimate Value $3,500 - UP

1812 S-289 R1 Large Date NGC graded AU53. Glossy medium chocolate brown. Frosty flowline luster covers the fields and protected areas and the eye appeal is very nice, especially on the obverse where the luster dominates. The reverse is not as lustrous thanks to uniform extremely faint granularity on all but the highpoints. The notable marks are a couple thin nicks right of the date and a tiny planchet flake off the tip of the bust, as struck. M-LDS, Breen state III. Most of the dentils on the reverse are gone and the reverse is rotated 25 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Our grade is EF45+ sharpness net EF40.
