Lot 303
1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793 NGC graded MS61 Brown. The obverse is frosty light to medium brown with microscopic specks of dark toning scattered over the lower half. The reverse is frosty olive brown and chocolate with a couple small spots of lighter brown toning. Satiny mint luster shows in the fields and protected areas, particularly on the reverse. No contact marks or verdigris, just a touch of rub on the highest points of the portrait. The reverse looks mint state. Nicely struck MDS, Breen state III, with die clashmarks on the reverse but no swelling on either side. This variety often has weakness at UNITED, but everything is well struck on this example. A very nice example of the Head of 1793 type of 1794 large cent. Our grade is AU55 sharpness net AU50+ for the tiny specks. Pop 19; 16 finer at NGC. Estimate Value $50,000 - UP

1794 S-22 R1 VG8. Sharpness F12 but covered with uniform extremely fine roughness under slightly glossy dark steel toning. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are some fine, very old scratches at the top of the date and a couple minor rim dents on both sides. M-LDS with obvious "mounds" on the reverse. The date and legends are complete and easily readable but not strong. Estimate Value $400 - UP

Lot 305
1794 S-27 R5 G6. A few points sharper, especially on the obverse, but there are numerous light scratches on both sides, all blended perfectly into the rather glossy dark olive and steel toning. The only other notable marks are a small dig between the tops of the 9 & 4 in the date and a nick on the lower edge of the jaw over the throat. MDS, Breen state II, showing delicate but obvious waves in the field from the chin to the right and from the middle curls to the rim at left. The date is bold and the legends are complete except for weakness on the denominator. Estimate Value $1,500 - UP

1794 S-30 R1 PCGS graded AU50. Glossy dark chocolate and olive brown. Underlying frosty flowline luster covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. No verdigris or notable marks, just lightly worn on the highpoints of the hair. M-LDS, Breen state III. The die crack through the R in AMERICA extends slightly through the wreath below and fine die rust covers the reverse. Both sides show clear die clashmarks. Our grade is VF35. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1; 5 finer, 2 in 55, 1 in 58, 1 in 62, 1 in 64. Estimate Value $7,500 - UP

M-LDS, Breen state III, with die clashmarks on both sides. The date and legends are complete and clear. This cent offers better eye appeal than the description might imply. 1794 S-56 R3 VF20. The so-called "Office Boy Reverse" variety due to the amateurish layout of the lettering on the reverse. Glossy dark olive brown and steel with slightly lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints of the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and void of any notable marks. LDS, Breen state III, with a die crack and clashmarks. A decent mid-grade example of this popular variety. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

Lot 313
1794 S-57 R1 F15. At least ten points sharper but there is fine roughness on the upper part of the obverse, strongest at LIBERTY. The remainder of the planchet is smooth. No verdigris, just a few small contact marks including a couple rim nicks at TE in UNITED. The strike was uneven thanks to axially misaligned dies (the die faces were not perfectly parallel) causing the upper part of the obverse and lower part of the reverse to be softly struck while everything else is strong. Glossy reddish medium chocolate brown. Rare EDS, Breen state I, with die clashmarks on the reverse but before the depression formed over ICA in AMERICA. The edge lettering is blundered with an extra ONE under DOL. A rare die state and a neat mint error. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP

Lot 314
1794 S-58 R3 VF25. Ten points sharper but the planchet is incomplete at the rim over UN in UNITED (as struck). The missing planchet metal on the reverse caused some weakness at the opposing dentils over the cap and above the L in LIBERTY, and there are some tiny planchet chips around the adjacent IBE. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the devices are nicely struck on a problem-free planchet. Glossy medium olive brown and chocolate, the reverse a few shades lighter than the obverse. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks on either side. Graded VF35 sharpness net VF20 by Noyes, his photo #33736. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

Lot 315
1794 S-58 R3 VG10. Five points sharper but covered with fine roughness that includes a collection of microscopic pits on the cheek. Lightly cleaned and retoned light olive and steel brown blending to darker olive brown in protected areas. No verdigris or notable contact marks. The date and legends are complete and easily readable. LDS, Breen state III late or IV early. There is a strong die crack arcing through UNIT and the area outside the crack is clearly raised as a retained cud, but that section of the die has not fallen away completely and most of UNIT remains readable. A very interesting intermediate die state not mentioned by Breen. Estimate Value $800 - UP

Lot 316
1794 S-58 R3 F15. Sharpness VF30 but covered with fine roughness under slightly glossy olive brown and steel toning. No verdigris. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet chip out of the rim over the right edge of the E in STATES. Rare LDS, Breen state IV. The retained cud break at UNIT is significantly raised above the plain of the rest of the die, highest on the right end at IT, less so at UN. We have never seen an example that definitively showed a full cud break where the section of die outlined by the crack was missing. This is the sharpest example we have seen with the cud raised so prominently. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1794 S-62 R4+ PCGS graded VF35. Glossy light to medium steel brown with frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas on both sides. Smooth and quite attractive showing only trivial marks and no roughness or verdigris. A small pinprick over the numerator in the fraction is a good identifying mark. LDS, Breen state II, with a strong cud break at the rim under the cap (the usual die state for this variety). Our grade is VF25, same as the PCGS grade. A premium example of this popular die variety. 1794 S-62 R4+ G5+. Very slightly sharper but the fields and protected areas are covered with extremely fine roughness while the highpoints are smooth. No verdigris, and the color is an attractive and slightly glossy medium brown with darker olive brown in the most-protected areas. The only marks are a light rim bruise right of the Y in LIBERTY, another left of the cap, and a third at ME in AMERICA. Late die state with a long, obvious cud break near the rim under the cap. The strike on the reverse is uneven, strong on the lower right and weaker on the upper left. Overall not bad for the grade. Estimate Value $400 - UP

1794 S-63 R2 F12. Sharpness near VF30 but covered with very fine roughness. Tiny specks of shallow verdigris can be found on both sides but they are not distracting. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown with slightly lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. Sharply struck EDS, Breen state I, before any die clashmarks. The date, lips, and tip of the nose are clearly doubled and the reverse is rotated 25 degrees clockwise relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. A decent if imperfect example of the "Fallen 4" die variety. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
