Lot 1432
1920-S. PCGS graded MS-62. A nice white coin that shows just a couple of trivial copper splashes common to gold coinage of this era. The strike is sharp and the surfaces attractive with minimal signs of bag handling. For identificaiton there is a shallow nick on Liberty`s thigh on the left facing the coin. Clearly not many from the original mintage of well over half a million coins are known today. Only 100 to 150 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report. Pop 16; 30 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 9171) Estimate Value $50,000 - UP

Lot 1444
1924-D. PCGS graded MS-63. Light golden toning. A scarce date and mint which is seldom found at all in any grade. Despite a prodigious mintage, precious few of these are known today. Estimates range from just over 1,000 pieces to maybe 1,500. The balance were melted in the 1930s. Hence any 1924-D double eagle is quite a challenge to locate. The Denver Mint coins, like those of San Francisco, seemed to find their way into the melting pots with great efficiency while those of Philadelphia at least had a fighting chance to be sent over to Europe to escape the melting pots here and survive until World War II was resolved. The European coins remain the primary source of Saint Gaudens double eagles, but the D and S mint coins are poorly represented from this source. Thus most D and S mint double eagles survived by happenstance here in this country (PCGS # 9178) Estimate Value $7,000 - 7,500

1924-S. NGC graded MS-64. A hint of gold tone with soft satin luster on both sides and pleasing surfaces. The date is sharp and the tiny S mintmark is clear and sits atop the ray just above the date. This is a scarce issue with most of the known coins being saved by happenstance. Here is an appealing example for the date and mint collector. Pop 116; 23 finer, 1 in 64+, 20 in 65, 1 in 65+, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 9179) Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000

1925-D. PCGS graded MS-61. Lovely golden toning. Scarce date. Housed in an Old Green Holder. This date and mint is really tough to find at all, less than 1,000 survive in all grades, a paltry sum indeed. The balance from the original mintage were likely melted. This becomes one of the tougher dates to find as such, so don't miss out if you are seeking an example of this prized Denver issue (PCGS # 9181) Estimate Value $4,000 - 4,400

1925-S. PCGS graded MS-62. Frosty and untoned. This is a typical San Francisco Mint issue, where virtually the entire mintage was melted in the 1930s, leaving approximately 800 pieces known today in all grades. This one has strong luster and a good strike. The surfaces are pleasing with scattered minor nicks, but no copper specks stand out. A popular date and mint, and a coin which will stand tall in any advanced collection of Saint-Gaudens gold coins (PCGS # 9182) Estimate Value $8,500 - 9,000

Lot 1457
1926-D. PCGS graded MS-62. This is a typical branch mint issue from this era, boasting a reasonably high mintge but a dismal survival rate. CoinFacts estimates that 475 pieces exist, but that may be too high, given the numbers posted by PCGS currently. Apparently little demand was found for thise Denver and San Francisco coins at the time of issue, and they were used for bank reserves. When April of 1933 came along and all gold coins were called in from the banking system, these coins were likely available and sent back to be melted. Hence the tiny survival rates, and ther rarity today. Rich golden tonin throughout, and nicely struck. Pop 49; 86 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 9184) Estimate Value $10,000 - 11,000

1927-S. PCGS graded MS-62. CAC. PQ. Another date where the mintage is not meaningful. Today approximately 225 pieces survive according to CoinFacts. This may be a generous estimate. These San Francisco coins were clearly not included in thebulk shipments of double eagles to Europe or anywhere else, as they have not turned up in any quantity. No small hoards have been reported either. Long regarded as one of the key dates to the series, and this attractive mint state coin will certainly find an honored place in any advanced collection. A nice scarce date Double Eagle with golden toning. Pop 32; 46 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 9188) Estimate Value $19,000 - 20,000

1929. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC. PQ. From this date forward all Saint Gaudens double eagles are scarce to rare, and will represent significant challenges for the collector to obtain each of these dates. The 1929 issue was large, coming in at 1,779,750 pieces. From that ample supply, the number of remaining coins is likely in the 350 to 500 pieces range. The balance of this large issue was melted in the 1930s. Thus, finding any example of this date is a chore for most collectors. Here is a solid Choice example that was graded long ago. The strike is sharp and this coin offers strong visual appeal and satiny luster. Very nice coin for the grade. Housed in an Old Green Holder (PCGS # 9190) Estimate Value $25,000 - 27,000

1930-S. PCGS graded UNC Details, Filed Rims. Looks like a choice uncirculated coin. Rare date that is in demand in all grades. This one has an outstanding appearance, but the rims show traces of filing where a few minor rim ticks were likely removed As the Depression of the 1930s began in late 1929, demand for double eagles must have waned at the San Francisco Mint, hence few were struck and all but a small group of 1930-S coins were eventually melted. This particular coin has a sharp die line in the field above the date, seen on several others struck with this same obverse die. Only 74,000 struck, with about 50 to 75 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report (PCGS # 9191) Estimate Value $25,000 - UP

1931-D. PCGS graded MS-64. CAC. PQ. A lovely example of this key date coin. Nicely toned on both sides with handsome greenish gold luster throughout. The strike is sharp as usually seen on this elusive issue. Although the mintage was limited at 106,500, precious few of these were ever released into circulation and most were swept up when gold was removed from circulation in April of 1933. Today virtually all known examples are in mint state condition, but few offer this quality and eye appeal. Considered to be the 8th rarest date of the series in all grades, and a formidable challenge to find for the specialist. Housed in an Old Green Holder and graded a generation ago. Only 100 to 150 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report. Pop 30; 25 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 9193) Estimate Value $80,000 - 85,000

Lot 1478
1932. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck and untoned. Both sides exhibit creamy soft luster which is largely undisturbed by handling marks or anything else. Although many were struck, these 1932 double eagles never left the system and when gold coins were called in by April of 1933, most of these were simply sent off to Fort Knox and soon melted, when their turn arose. Thus another key date was created by these actions as just a few 1932 double eagles had gotten into the channels of commerce before they were recalled. An extraordinary example of this prized rarity in gem condition, and one worthy of the finest collection. Only 100 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report. Pop 32; 12 finer, 1 in 65+, 10 in 66, 1 in 66+. (PCGS # 9194) Estimate Value $80,000 - 90,000
