Lot 1151
1840-C. PCGS graded AU-53. The strike is reasonably sharp on the obverse where just a bit of softness is noted on Liberty's lovelock curl over her neck. The usual die crack is present through the I of AMERICA to the top two arrow tips. Lovely golden toning on both sides. Only 18,992 struck. Pop 12; 28 finer at PCGS. 1845-D. PCGS graded MS-60. The obverse and reverse are well struck and untoned. Lots of luster visible in the fields while the surface marks are minimal for the assigned grade. This is a rare issue to find in any grade of mint state, as most of the original mintage was released and entered circulation unnoticed and stayed there for years and years. Only a handful of coins apparently survived in mint condition. All Dalhlonega gold from this era is popular, especially when found this nice. Only 90,629 struck. Pop 3; 19 finer, 12 in 61, 3 in 62, 3 in 63, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 8224) Estimate Value $5,000 - 5,500

1847. PCGS graded MS-63+. CAC. PQ. Untoned and boldly struck with full definition on Liberty's curls as well as the eagle's talons and feathers. While not a particularly tough date in terms of the number known, this is clearly one of the finest graded, with just a half dozen seen technically better by PCGS. Interesting bisecting and branching die crack on the reverse, attesting to how sharply this coin was struck. Just recently graded. Popular as a type coin. Pop 3; 6 finer, 4 in 64, 2 in 66. Most known examples of this Charlotte issue show moderate circulation evidence, with mint state coins numbering a dozen or so. Here is one of these condition rarities that will excite any specialist of this series. Despite a fair number struck, this issue is quite elusive this well preserved and in mint state. Clean and attractive! Only 64,472 struck. Pop 2; 4 finer, 2 in 62, 1 in 63, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 8237) Estimate Value $14,000 - 15,000

Lot 1181
1857-D. PCGS graded AU-58. This is the lowest mintage Dahlonega Mint half eagle struck since that Mint opened. Later issues through 1861-D continue to show fewer coins struck as the presures built on this Mint with the onset of the Civil War looming. For the collector, a high grade 1857-D helps define an advanced Dahlonega collection, so a coin like this should be strongly pursued. Today most of the known examples are well worn, and tremendous collector demand is noted when a choice, high grade 1857-D crosses the auction block. This particular coin offers substantial luster in the fields, a sharper than typical strike and clean surfaces. These factors combine to keep the eye appeal high. An exceptional coin for the astute numismtist. Identifiable by a short, shallow scratch in the lower right obverse between the last two stars. Mostly untoned. Only 17,046 struck. Pop 11; 9 finer, 4 in 61, 4 in 62, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 8273) Estimate Value $4,500 - 5,000

1859-C. NGC graded MS-62. A bright and frosty coin that shows a decent strike on the central devices along with clean fields and surfaces. As the Civil War grew ever so close on the heals of this issue, this coin was likely saved and somehow survived the war, unscathed and uncirculated. Less than one percent of the original Charlotte mintage surivived from 1859, and this is clearly one of the finest examples known today. A foremost condition rarity. Only 31,847 struck of which approximately 225 pieces exist today. Pop 1; none finer at NGC. (PCGS # 8281) Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000

1859-D. NGC graded AU-58. Medium D. Lightly toned with luster evident in the fields. The surfaces are pleasing with no deep nicks or bagmarks. A scarce issue with a modest mintage which all but disappeared through time and attrition. It is likely that only one percent of those coined survived to today, and this is one of the nicer examples we've seen. Only 10,366 struck. Pop 28; 15 finer at NGC. Estimate Value $4,700 - 5,000

Lot 1188
1860-D. Large D. PCGS graded AU-55. Untoned with some mint luster evident. The Large D variety is far rarer than the Medium D issue of this tough date. PCGS has only graded a handful of examples in all grades. This one is certainly one of the finer examples, and offers rich yellow gold color, a sharp strike and clean surfaces. There are no deep cuts or nicks to mar the eye appeal. Destined for an advanced collection of Dahlonega gold coins.

As the Civil loomed ever closer, the Dahlonega Mint received little gold to strike, so mintages declined year over year with the economic and war pressures building. Of the coins that were struck, most simply disappeared, lost to the trials and tribulations of that troubled time. Here is one that was set aside and saved, thankfully for the lucky collectors of today, who can long enjoy its beauty and charm. Only 14,635 struck. Pop 3; 2 finer in 58. 1860-D. Large D. PCGS graded AU-55. Untoned with lots of luster evident. This is a rare variety as the vast majority of the 1860-D half eagles show the Medium D reverse. Only a handful have this Large D variation. Our consignor was able to secure two of these rare Large D pieces by diligent searching for many years and we are proud to offer them to the collecting fraternity today. Clean surfaces and attractive mint color throughout. Only 14,635 struck. Pop 3; 2 finer in 58. (PCGS # 98286) Estimate Value $4,000 - 4,500

Lot 1190
1861-D. NGC graded AU-58. Well struck for this issue with minimal soft areas on the devices. This is the final year of operation of the Dahlonega Mint, being located in the deep South of this country in the state of Georgia. When the Civil War began in early 1861, this Mint would soon find itself taken over by the Confederates, which occurred on April 8, 1861. The Confederates needed all the hard currency (gold and silver) they could find, so all remaining planchets were probably struck, possibly 1,000 to 2,000 more gold pieces added to the official mintage. The surfaces remain bright and untoned. Only 1,597 pieces were struck under the United States, plus others under the Confederacy. Today only about 75 of these are known in all grades, this one clearly finer than the majority. Quite important for the specialist and this is clearly one of the most desierable issues of the period, with a roughly equal chance of being struck by the United States or the Confederates, although these is no way to differentiate these coins struck from the same dies. Pop 11; 4 finer, 1 in 61, 2 in 62, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 8290) Estimate Value $38,000 - 40,000
