Flowing Hair Half Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 233
1795. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC. PQ. Well struck with lovely rainbow toning on both sides. Should be re-graded for a higher grade as the surfaces are quite outstanding in quality, and would certainly surpass the grade assigned a generation ago today. This is a short lived type coin, dated only 1794 and 1795 when the flowing hair design was replaced. Curiously the new design to follow was the Draped Bust, Small Eagle style and these were nearly minted in late 1795 (matching the new Bust dollars that year). This is evidenced by the 1796/5 Draped Bust half dime obverse that was used to strike 1796 half dimes. In any event, this gorgeous 1795 Flowing Hair half dime will please any specialist and is destined to represent this important design type issued by the Philadelphia Mint. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Only 78,660 struck. Pop 41; 55 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 4251) Estimate Value $12,500 - UP
