The grape bunch and kinnor combination of this undated zuz continue types first introduced for the silver denomination in the second year (133/4 CE) of the Bar Kokhba War. Although this specimen is complete, some examples appear to have been cut in antiquity. Some commentators have considered the cutting to have been a means of invalidating the coins after the disastrous conclusion of the war while others have suggested that they simply represent an expedient for making change. Problematic for the invalidation theory is the fact that so few cut coins are known, but at the same time cut fractional coinage is also a great rarity in the ancient world once coin usage became firmly established.

Upon Trajan's return to Rome in A.D. 107 after the Dacian Wars, he turned his attention to several massive building projects, which included a new aqueduct, the Aqua Traiana, which brought water from Etruria to feed his new baths, the Via Traiana, a road linking Beneventum and Brundisium, a new harbor at the mouth of the Tiber, and his magnificent new forum, the Forum Traiani with its column which recorded his campaigns in Dacia. In order to finance all the new construction, he had the immense booty taken from the Dacians, but he also recalled the older, worn precious metal coins then in circulation and had it melted and restruck at a slightly lower standard. Most of this newly issued coinage consisted of traditional reverse types. However, he also struck at this time his "restoration" coinage, which copies many of the older types removed from circulation as well as several of his deified predecessors. These copies linked Trajan's regime to Rome's illustrious past, but were struck only in token numbers and are all quite rare today.

Ex Antiqua XVII (2013), 108 A Connoisseur's Collection of Ancient Jewish Coins.
Hadrian traveled extensively throughout the Roman provinces during his reign, and struck an number of reverse types to commemorate each province he visited. These highly collectible coins are generally referred to by numismatists as Hadrian's "Travel Series.' One of the most difficult to obtain of the entire series - and probably the rarest of these commemorative coins - honors the province of Judaea, which Hadrian visited in the summer of AD 130. The reverse depicts the emperor facing Judaea, who is the act of sacrificing at an altar flanked by a bull. It is particularly poignant as it alludes the loyalty of the province to the central government in Rome. It is not known whether this type dates immediately to Hadrian's visit in AD 130 or perhaps later, either during or after the outbreak of the Bar Kokhba Revolt (AD 132-135), but here we follow the dating of AD 134-138 proposed by Mattingly and Sutherland in RIC II.
