Lot 235
Dime. 1796 Five berries. Davis 1. NGC graded MS-66. Simply magnificent! Here is as perfect an example of our first dime as one could ever hope to obtain. Unusually well struck with full hair detail on Liberty, full denticals around the borders and most of the stars are fully defined. The frosty mint surfaces are overlaid with violet in the centers surrounded by deeper electric and midnight blue iridescent toning. To have two spectacular gems in the same sale is unheard of. Here is you chance to select and bid from amongst two of the finest known examples extant.

Lot 236
Dime. 1796. NGC graded MS-66. JR-1, Rarity-3. NGC graded Mint State 66. One of the very finest known of this first year of issue, and decidedly rare in this grade. In fact, NGC has only graded 6 this high, with none graded higher. The coin itself is lightly toned on the obverse, with deeper colors around the periphery, the inner fields and Liberty herself show a delicate gold tone which only enhances the devices featured. Turning to the reverse, the eye is greeted by an ocean of blues and greens with the central area and the eagle gold and rose in color. Blazing luster in the fields, which is undiminished by the toning. Well struck for the issue, with a hint of weakness on Liberty's neck and on the eagle's chest. Of course, one of the main features of this coin is the remarkable grade, a choice gem 66, which means there are virtually no signs of contact anywhere on the surfaces. How this coin has come down to us may never be known, but the fact remains that it is here, virtually untouched since the day it was struck, and only graced by lovely toning colors.
This particular variety has a small lump near the first star on the obverse, this was caused by a bubble in the obverse die, which collapsed very early in the dies life, only a single coin is known without this familiar die lump. All others struck show evidence of this curious die feature. As a variety, this is one of the more "common" varieties of the date, but truly no 1796 Dime can be considered "common". All are scarce and have been eagerly sought out by collectors for decades, not only as the first year of issue of the denomination, but as an important two year type coin. A superb coin in every way and worthy of the finest collection.

Lot 237
Seated Liberty Dime. 1848. NGC graded Proof 66. Absolute quality here, toned with deep blues and golds around the periphery, white at the centers from long, careful storage by collectors, similar on the reverse, but a bit lighter. Fabulous surfaces and a rarity which is difficult to overemphasize. Apparently only half dozen exist, Breen lists seven with two more reported, but some duplication is normal as individual coins appear then disappear into collections for decades. Furthermore, this particular coin is one of the very best, tied at Proof-66 with one other (possibly the same coin resubmitted?). Better than Eliasberg's at Proof-65. Struck during the haphazard years before Proof mintages were accurately recorded or even available to collectors, normally the few (if any) produced went to dignitaries or gifts to foreign political leaders, not to collectors. How this coin was preserved so perfectly is one of those numismatic mysteries, but here it is in all its near perfect glory. An outstanding opportunity for the advanced collector to acquire a real treasure.

Lot 238
Seated Liberty Dime. 1852-O. PCGS graded MS-64. One of the very finest known of the date, with only 3 so graded by PCGS, and none graded higher! NGC hasn't graded any higher either. Free of toning and with clean fields and devices. A glass will note a few stray marks, but this coin is decidedly above and beyond the normal Mint State example. Only 430,000 struck, with few even approaching this grade. An opportunity to purchase a truly rare date in near gem condition.

Seated Liberty Dime. 1871-CC. Sharpness of VF-20. The surfaces are quite porous, probably from being buried in the ground. Very rare and missing from most collections, and desirable for its rarity.

Mercury Dime. 1925-S. PCGS graded MS-65. A frosty jewel of a coin, with abundant luster and eye appeal. The strike is typical of the San Francisco Mint, a bit soft, without the full bands that often elude this date. Faint hazy toning and really superb in every respect.

Lot 278
Mercury Dime. 1926-S. PCGS graded MS-64. Full Bands. And a truly beautiful coin it is, with delicate gold and russet toning around the peripheries, moreso on the obverse than reverse, and boldly struck. Nearly a full gem, perhaps a stray hairline from that grade, but a glass fails to locate anything to really keep this from the next grade higher. One of the key dates to the Mercury Dime series and worth a premium.

Mercury Dime. 1942/1. NGC graded MS-61. A bit dull from being dipped, but the overdate is sharp and can be seen by the unaided eye. This coin has the look of a higher grade, but has tiny marks on LI of LIBERTY from a coin counting machine which probably accounts for the grade. Ever popular and needed by all the Mercury Dime collectors.

Mercury Dime. 1945. PCGS graded MS-64. Full Bands. Here is one of the few dates that is just about impossible to find with Full Bands at the center of the reverse. Philadelphia apparently turned down the striking pressure on the these, and very few were struck with the full band feature on the reverse. Lightly toned, and boldly struck, and with complete separation between the horizontal band at the center of the reverse.
