Seated Liberty Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 404
Seated Liberty Dollar. 1842. MS-60 Plus. Actually resembles a proof at first glance. The strike is sharp, including full center points within the stars, and the fields are fully proof-like. Enough mint frost is detected, including between the stripes in the shield, to properly deem this a business strike; all is lightly toned which adds to its appeal.

Lot 405
Seated Liberty Dollar. 1842. AU-58. Lovely gray color and well struck, but there is one hidden mark on Liberty, near her waist. On the reverse the rim has been carelessly filed along the left side, perhaps to hide some rim bumps and other disturbances. These large heavy coins often suffered from rim bumps and similar problems and were then repaired by persons of varying degrees of skill.

Lot 406
Seated Liberty Dollar. 1842. AU-50. A most unusual offering which includes a 1963 large silver medal dedicated to Christian Gobrecht by T. Johnson featuring Gobrecht's seated Liberty obverse, with stars and other design elements, the reverse with a flying eagle amid stars as seen on the 1838 Pattern Silver Dollars. The silver medal weighs several ounces. The 1842 coin is very choice, and both are mounted in a custom Capital Plastics holder.

Lot 414
Seated Liberty Dollar. 1850. Sharpness of AU-50. However, the entire coin has been worked on, burnished and retoned. A glass reveals several disturbances, but the coin has a decent appearance without a glass. Weak from repair work on ONE, with several areas having heat damage. A rare date and always in demand, which is why every single 1850 Dollar is a sought-after commodity. Retoned to a medium gray color.

Lot 415
Seated Liberty Dollar. 1850-O. VF-30. One of the scarce dates from this popular series. Medium gray toning, evenly distributed on both sides. One rim bump between stars nine and ten has been carefully filed down, not affecting the dentils or devices. One for the collector.

Lot 416
Seated Liberty Dollar. 1851. PCGS graded Proof 64. Restrike. Centered date. One of approximately 15 known, this clearly one of the very best in existance. PCGS has only graded 4 coins this high, with none graded higher. In the toning department, this coin has little to cover over any problems, it's virtually untoned aside from a delicate whisper of color around the extreme periphery. Frosted devices float off the mirror fields. Trivial hairlines reside atop the fields, but we have far fewer here than normally encountered. Identifiable by a short lint mark on the first star and a barely visible spot in the field below F A of OF AMERICA. We are proud to offer one of the classic rarities of the Seated Dollar series, long recognized as such. These restrikes were created sometime after 1851 once early collectors found that no original 1851 Dollars were available, certain "friends" in the Philadelphia Mint set up another obverse die, this one with the date centered instead of very high as on the originals, and ran off a few more to meet demand, no doubt at a small profit. An important rarity in the finest available grade!

Seated Liberty Dollar. 1853. EF-45. Repaired in the right obverse field probably to remove a mark or two, and with a tiny planchet flaw on the edge above the fourth star. Darkly toned and with some mottling in the colors. A scarce date which is still needed by many collectors. Well struck and worth inspecting.
