Lot 3679		1872, $5 National Gold Bank Note. National Gold Bank of D.O. Mills & Co., Sacramento, CA. Fr-1138. CGA graded EF 40. . Fr-1138. . KL-225. Only about three dozen $5 notes on this famous National Gold Bank have survived, including this beautiful example that is easily one of the best two or three listed in the census. The paper upon which these notes were printed did not wear well, and the vast majority of these Gold Bank notes did exactly as they were intended: circulated in commerce. Hence, most surviving examples from any bank are well worn. This note is a pleasant exception, and as such is an important rarity that should interest even the most fastidious collector. This is one of only 20 examples of this rare number that have been recorded by Gengerke, who traces this specific note back to its Boys Town pedigree. Although the edges have been trimmed a bit, the colors remain solid for the grade and the overall appearance is quite attractive. Even with the advancement of prices in the currency market during the last several years, notes like this seem to this cataloger to be still highly undervalued -- a U.S. coin of similar rarity would likely bring multiples of the realization that we expect today for this note. Although we can't see the reason through the holder, this lovely Gold Note likely missed out on a Gem grade only due to a single light fold that was located by the experts at PCGS. Although this note did not receive the coveted "PPQ" designation from PCGS, it is still a beautiful Gem example with great centering and excellent eye appeal. No embossing is evident--perhaps the reason why the "PPQ" designation is absent--but there were no folds found by the graders and the visual aesthetics are not easily matched. Only about three dozen examples of this rare Fr. number are known, with this about in the middle grade-wise for the issue. This note is listed in the census as "VG-Fine," at which grade it appeared when it last sold on a fixed price list in 1977 -- a good example of how grading standards have changed over the years. It certainly appears to be accurately graded by today�s standards, and is attractive with a bold orange-gold color on the back. Estimated Value $25,000 - 35,000.
