Sadovsky. 3 ½" Sterling Silver (unknown weight) medal mounted in a 6 ½" x 8 ½" frame with velvet backing. Inscribed plate reads: PRESENTED TO OUR GREAT FRIEND PRESIDENT GEORGE MEANY ON HIS 85TH BIRTHDAY WITH OUR HIGHEST ESTEEM, HISTRADUT, TEL-AVIV, 16 AUG. 1979. George Meany (1894-1980) was the key figure in the creation of the AFL-CIO and served as the AFL-CIO's first president, from 1955 to 1979. Israel. The Joseph Human Rights Award Presented by the Anti-Defamation League to Barbara Jordan, October 22, 1993. Barbara Jordan (1936-1996) was an American lawyer, educator and politician who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. A Democrat, she was the first African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction and the first Southern African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives. Lot consists of two medals in presentation case. One medal is 59mm, 170gm, silver, with mirrorlike surfaces, engraved: "Joseph Prize/for Human Rights/to/BARBARA JORDAN/Anti-Defamation League/of B'nai B'rith/on behalf of/The Joseph Foundation/in memory of/I.S. and Anna K. Joseph/October 22, 1993/Detroit, Michigan." A couple of faint marks don't distract. The other is an Israel State Medal commemorating Masada. It is also 59mm, 115gm, edge marked .935 Silver, issued by the Israel Government Coins & Medals Corp. in 1977. It has a minor edge dent on obverse at 6:30. Previous winners of this award include African American civil rights leaders Roy Wilkins and Bayard Russin, as well as Golda Meir, Elie Wiesel, et al.
