Beautiful high relief medal featuring golden-domed Dome of the Rock within panoramic scene of Jerusalem. By noted Israeli artist/sculptor Y. A. Sadovsky. 3 ½" Sterling Silver (unknown weight) medal mounted in a 6 ½" x 8 ½" frame with velvet backing. Inscribed plate reads: PRESENTED TO OUR GREAT FRIEND PRESIDENT GEORGE MEANY ON HIS 85TH BIRTHDAY WITH OUR HIGHEST ESTEEM, HISTRADUT, TEL-AVIV, 16 AUG. 1979. George Meany (1894-1980) was the key figure in the creation of the AFL-CIO and served as the AFL-CIO's first president, from 1955 to 1979. Histradut, established in 1920, is Israel's national trade union center and represents the majority of Israel's trade unionists. Excellent condition 2.) Lot 1981		Israel. The Joseph Human Rights Award Presented by the Anti-Defamation League to Barbara Jordan, October 22, 1993. Barbara Jordan (1936-1996) was an American lawyer, educator and politician who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. A Democrat, she was the first African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction and the first Southern African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives. Lot consists of two medals in presentation case. One medal is 59mm, 170gm, silver, with mirrorlike surfaces, engraved: "Joseph Prize/for Human Rights/to/BARBARA JORDAN/Anti-Defamation League/of B'nai B'rith/on behalf of/The Joseph Foundation/in memory of/I.S. and Anna K. Joseph/October 22, 1993/Detroit, Michigan." A couple of faint marks don't distract. The other is an Israel State Medal commemorating Masada. It is also 59mm, 115gm, edge marked .935 Silver, issued by the Israel Government Coins & Medals Corp. in 1977. It has a minor edge dent on obverse at 6:30. Previous winners of this award include African American civil rights leaders Roy Wilkins and Bayard Russin, as well as Golda Meir, Elie Wiesel, et al. Entertainer Jack Benny (1894-1974) played the part of a skinflint on his radio and television programs. But actually, this beloved comedian, raised millions of dollars for various worthy causes - including State of Israel Bonds. This official Israel State Medal is 59mm, edge marked .935 silver, with the added incused signature of Levi Eshkol. With loop. Pale golden toning with some scattered specks of toning around name (fingerprint?). Rare memento of one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century, that should be of interest to his many fans.
