Lot 1077
1806. PCGS graded MS-64. Better than average strike for this Draped Bust style quarter. The surfaces have a pleasing light grey toning on both sides, with a few deeper flecks of color scattered about. The devices show excellent definition of the finer details on Liberty's hair curls, as well as on the eagle's wings. This is noteworthy given the later die state here where multiple die cracks are present on the reverse, and extensive rim crumbling noted on the upper edge of the reverse. This die must have been falling apart! These add to the already considerable charm of the present coin, and invite study and give numismatic pleasure to anyone who appreciates the early struggles of our Philiadelphia Mint. Pop 10; 5 finer, 2 in 64+, 3 in 65. (PCGS # 5314) Value $18,000 - 20,000

Lot 1078
1818. PCGS graded MS-66. An imperial example of this issue, with glittering mint frost on the surfaces and radiant luster in the fields. Boldly struck on all the devices and incredibly appealing for the virtual perfection of the surfaces and strike. There is multi-color peripheral toning on both sides which adds to the already amazing eye appeal of this condition rarity. Quite attractive. Not only is this coin stunning, but it is one of the finest seen of this date. Pop 4; 1 finer in 67. (PCGS # 5322) Value $35,000 - UP

1818, 8 over 5. Browning-3, Rarity 3. PCGS graded MS-65. A memorable example of this overdate and a coin for the ages, as so few are known at the gem or finer grade level. This is a prized offering for the specialist. The surfaces are outstanding with delicate steel gray with golden accents near the rims. The centers are brighter white silver. As to the strike it is sharp on all of Liberty's curls. Frosty and nicely toned on both sides. The overdate feature has pretty much faded away from die lapping or wear, and the reverse is quickly identifiable by a thin crack up through the lowest arrowhead. Another condition rarity and worthy and an aggressive bid! Pop 1; 2 finer in 66. Value $18,000 - UP

1820. Large 0. B-1, Low Rarity 5. Sharpness of AU, cleaned long time ago. A scarce die pairing and a coin which has a lot to offer despite a minor cleaning in the past. The strike is sharp throughout, and there are no deep or detracting handling marks worthy of note. Value $500 - 600

Lot 1082
1838. PCGS graded MS-64. This is the first year of issue of the new Christian Gobrecht design, which replaced the Capped Bust style mid year in 1838. The strike is a trifle soft on the stars and a few other design elements, but all the important design elements are present. Its is noteworthy that Gobrecht changed the lower reverse design to read Quar. Dol. from 25 Cents on the prior design, a change which seems a bit poorly thought out unless one is determined to have these coins known as "quarters". Nice light even toning on both sides. An attractive example of this new design from the year it was launched. Pop 26; 11 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5391) Value $6,000 - UP

1838. NGC graded MS-64. Here is an attractive and sharply struck example of this first year of issue of the Gobrecht design. The stars are all bold right to their central radial lines, and Liberty's head shows strong definition on her uppermost curls. The eagle's feathers and claws are well defined too. A frosty white example. Boldly struck. Pop 26; 9 finer at NGC. Value $5,000 - UP

Lot 1084
1843. PCGS graded Proof 64. Boldly struck with a hint of light even tone on both sides especially around the rims. This is an incredibly rare issue with only 10 struck, with 6 to 8 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. This is one of the finer examples known today with glittering mirror fields and frosted devices. The surfaces show only a few trivial signs of handling, nothing to distract the eye, and of course, the incredible sharp strike expected. At the time these were coined, Proofs were not available to the general public, and production was extremely limited. Today these are the equivalent to numismatic caviar, seldom seen or offered, and always put away into advanced collections often for decades as a time. If you have ever desired one of these early delicacies then be prepared to do battle when this one crosses the auction block, another opportunity to buy an 1843 proof quarter may be years away. Pop 2; 2 finer, 1 in 64+, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 5537) Value $25,000 - UP

1873. No arrows. Closed 3. PCGS graded AU-58. To say the least, chaos errupted in 1873 for our coinage. The year begain in January like any other, with normal dies prepared and shipped to the various branch mints. In Philadelphia, quarter production began as usual in January with coins like this. In late January the Chief Coiner filed a formal complaint with the Director of the Mint that the 3 on the smaller denominations the large knobs could make it appear to be an 8. Hence the engraving department under William Barber had to create an entire new die set with a more open 3. The mintage was again interrupted when in March, 1873, the planchet weight standard changed and Arrows were again added flanking the date of dimes, quarters, and half dollars. The issue of the Closed 3, No Arrows half dollar has always been one of moderate rarity, with a recorded mintage of 40,000 pieces, but importantly precious few of these come in high grades. The finest yet seen in a nice MS-62. A nice white coin. Only 40,000 struck. Pop 2; 5 finer, 3 in 61, 2 in 62. (PCGS # 5484) Value $8,500 - UP

1873-CC. Arrows. NGC graded AU-55. This is an incredibily important rarity, and one of the finest seen of this coveted date and mint. Despite what appears to be a rather decent mintage, only 50 or so are known today in all grades. This is one of the finest, and likely within the top 8 or so to survive in all grades. The obverse shows light silver gray huges with a bold strike throughout. For the reverse the toning is a bit deeper and still attractive. Surface quality is quite high, with minimal signs of handling or circulation from such a brief time in the channels of commerce. For identification there is a trivial diagonal nick which crosses two of the vertical shield lines on the reverse. A coin of formidable rarity and desirability, and destined to be a major highlight of any advanced collection lucky enough to secure it. Well struck with light even toning on both sides. Very rare in high grades. Only 12,462 struck. Pop 1; 1 finer in 65. Value $40,000 - UP

1874. Arrows. PCGS graded Proof 66+. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides that shows rich royal blue around the date, more delicate coppery gold and russet through the stars on the obverse. The reverse is well matched with the deeper blue on the upper rim opposite the date area, and lighter gold and russet around the periphery. Amazing quality and eye appeal, and so close to the Superb grade level. Only 850 struck. Pop 18; 8 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5575) Value $5,000 - 5,500

Lot 1093
1878-S. PCGS graded MS-64. Scarce date with a mintage of 140,000 pieces, but for some reason most of these disappeared long ago, today it is estimated by CoinFacts that only 300 examples exist. That's far fewer than one would expect given the recorded mintage. Perhaps many were melted and never released? Today we probably won't find out unless there's some record of what became of the majority of the 1878-S quarters. This one is quite attractive, and approaches the gem grade in terms of preservation and eye appeal. A condition rarity near the top of those known, and a downright rare issue today. Well struck and with light toning. Pop 8; 5 finer, 2 in 65, 1 in 65+, 2 in 66. (PCGS # 5510) Value $4,500 - 5,000

1889. PCGS graded Proof 67. CAC. PQ. Wonderful rainbow toning on both sides which shows as pastel teal and blue around the rims, fading to golden russet into the fields, then brighter silver on the obverse. The strike is somewhat shallow on the stars. For the reverse the toning is more even, with similar shades to the obverse. All quite alluring and pleasing to the eye. A late issue Proof from the Liberty Seated quarter series, and one that will stand tall in any type set or advanced collection for its stunning quality and eye appeal. Only 711 struck. Lot 1098
1892. PCGS graded Proof 66+. CAC. PQ. Boldly struck with wonderful rainbow toning which spans from vibrant blue in the fields and devices, changing over to russet-gold at the centers, and lighter iridescence closer to the rims. This toning is perfectly matched and balanced on both sides. A coin which offers exceptional eye appeal. The 1892 Barber coinage was launched on the dime, quarter and half dollar, with the obverse dies all of the same design. The reverse of the dime continued the same as seen on the prior Liberty Seated design since 1860. Mint Engraver Charles E Barber used the mirror image of the Morgan design of the silver dollar obverse (1878) for the head of Liberty, and cropped her hair in the back, and placed the balance of her hair beneath a large cap. This coin should be called PR67. Only 1,245 proofs struck. Pop 2; 55 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5678) Value $3,300 - UP
