1809 C-1 R4 PCGS XF Details, Scratched. Attractive glossy chocolate brown with traces of frosty lighter steel brown toning in a few of the protected areas on the obverse. Unfortunately there are a half dozen fine nearly vertical hairline scratches down the portrait, and most of these are well-hidden in the hair details. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and this half cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only additional defect is a speck of verdigris on the lower left tip of star 7, and this is easy to miss. Nicely struck MDS, Manley state 2.0, with a clear die crack through the tops of MERICA and the reverse rotated 15 degrees CCW. This is the Breen plate coin for the variety on page 296 in his half cent encyclopedia. Tied for CC#4 honors in the Mike Spurlock census, CC#4 in the Jim McGuigan list, and third finest in the Breen list. This piece tied for second place behind the Missouri Cabinet example at the 2004 EAC Convention Half Cent Happening. Certainly a very important example of this rare variety, the toughest variety of the year. Our grade is VF35 sharpness net VF25+. The attribution and Green Tree Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Only 6 graded records for the variety at PCGS. Estimate Value $8,000 - UP

A light diagonal nick on the jawline over the throat can help identify this piece, but it is barely visible. MDS, Manley state 2.0. The die crack through the top of MERICA is clear and it fades away as it reaches the dentils off the end of the adjacent stem. The reverse is rotated 25 degrees CCW. 1809 C-2 R3 PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. The obverse is lustrous medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highest points of the design; the reverse is frosty steel brown and light chocolate with splashes of darker chocolate and olive. A couple of these darker areas contain traces of extremely fine carbon. This half cent has mint state eye appeal but there is a light rim bruise at star 7 and those small stains of darker toning on the reverse. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0. Stars 2-6 are now connected by a fine die crack and the reverse is rotated 135 degrees CW. Called MS60 in the Breen census, and it has been graded at that level in several significant auctions. Clearly superior to the Manley plate coin for the die state. Our grade is AU50. Near the top of the condition census for the variety, and it comes with a nice provenance.
