Lot 520		A Catalina Sub Hunter On Patrol in WW 2 by Nixon Galloway. A wonderful and evocative wartime image by famous aviation artist Nixon Galloway, ASAA (died Jan. 2003), whose paintings have been exhibited at the Air Force Museum, Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, Kennedy Space Center, RAF Museum in London and the White House. Here a PBY Catalina patrol bomber flies lonely anti-submarine duty in the North Atlantic during World War Two, with icebergs below and a glacier in the background. A print laid down on canvas, then slightly highlighted by the artist and hand signed by him at lower right with date 1988. 28.25" X 18.25", handsomely framed to an overall size of 30" X 40"; minor steaking, otherwise very good condition and ready to hang. Lot 521		A Fine World War Two Navy G-1 Leather Flight Jacket. In dark brown leather with similar satin liner, the collar in dyed brown sheep fur. Size label worn, but aprox. 42L or thereabout. Contract maker label reads "Buaer-U.S. Navy G-1 Flight Jacket Spec. 55J14 (AER) Contarct No. N383S-69537 A. Pritzketr & Sons, Inc." Lot 522		American Jews In World War II, The Story of 550,000 Fighters For Freedom. 1947 Scarce Two Volume Set. Compiled by the National Jewish Welfare Board and published by The Dial Press in 1947. Vol. I, 356 pages, consists of stirring battle accounts of Jews serving in all branches of service in all theatres of the war. The very scarce Vol. II of 590 pages is a roll of tens of thousands of Jewish servicemen, listed alphabetically by their state and city of origin, along with their rank and the decorations and medals they received, this information invaluable for war research purposes. Lot 523		Generals Clark, Doolittle, and McNarney. Mark W. Clark (1896-1994) U.S. General during World War II and the Korean War. He succeeded General Matthew Ridgway as commander of UN forces in Korea and signed the cease-fire agreement with North Korea in 1953. IPS in black ink, Italy, June 14, 1945, 10" x 8". Inscribed to Fred Giffoniello. James H. Doolittle (1896-1993) Air Force general. PS ("J.H. Doolittle") in black ink, n.p., n.d. 5¼" x 4¾"; and Joseph T. McNarney (1893-1972) U. S. Lot 524		Great Britain. 1940-44 Franco-British Association Merit Medal. Gilt AE and enamels with crossed swords within the angles of the cross. A superb specimen of this medal honoring citizens of both countries who worked together during WW 2 to defeat the Third Reich. Choice Nearly Mint State. Estimated Value $125 - 175. Lot 525		Iwo Jima Statue Photo Signed by Joe Rosenthal. Photo of American artist Felix de Weldon's 20-ton statue, based on Joe Rosenthal's memorable photograph, taken on February 23, 1945, of U.S. Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima, signed and inscribed, "To my good friend, Walter Neill, who recruited and manned until we won--admiration from Joe Rosenthal," 9½" x 7½", n.p., n.d. Very good; some overall toning; the letter "T" has been partially rewritten, due to a small area of paper loss; the page to which the image is mounted has an edge tear. Attractively matted and framed to an overall size of 16" x 13". Not examined out of frame. Rosenthal's historic photograph won him a Pulitzer Prize and became a powerful victory symbol for the war-weary American public. Felix de Weldon began work on his statue in 1946 and completed it nine years later. It stands at the edge of Arlington National Cemetery and honors all members of the United States Marine Corps who died in battle since the American Revolution. Estimated Value $500 - 600. Lot 526		Jimmy Doolittle B-25 Raid on Japan Painting by Reynolds. An original oil on canvas, 20 by 24, nicely framed to an overall size of 26.5 by 30.5, signed at lower right "Reynolds 1976." Handsomely rendered depiction of the historical event, showing Doolittle's B-25 having just taken off from the aircraft carrier Hornet with a guarding destroyer at right. William J. Reynolds, a self-taught artrist born June 4, 1918, is well known for his avaition paintings and prints. In WW 2, he served in the Army Air Corps as a fighter pilot in P-40s out of New Guinea. He has had many important commissions, notably two each year for the National Congress on Aerospace Education. His prints are sold at the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum. Lot 527		Messerschmidt, Willy (1898-1978) German aircraft designer and manufacturer. The BF 109, designed in 1934 by Messerschmidt with Walter Rethel, became the most important fighter in the German Luftwaffe. Messerschmitt's BF 209 held the world speed record for propeller-driver aircraft for decades. PS in blue ink below the wing of the plane, 11¾" x 15¾", n.p., n.d. Fine. Headed by an American eagle and quoting President Franklin D. Roosevelt's speech from February 3, 1943: "No loyal citizen of the United States should be denied the democratic right to exercise the responsibilities of his citizenship, regardless of his ancestry….Americanism is not, and never was, a matter of race or ancestry…." Lot 532		Raeder, Erich (1876-1960) Commander in chief of the German Navy (1928-1943); he was replaced by Karl Doenitz. He was conviceted of waging agressive war at the Nuremberg War Crimes Triial and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released in 1955 and wrote his memoirs (Mein Leben) in retirement. PS ("Raeder") as admiral and head of the German Navy,over an official naval stamp containing an iron eagle and swastika, followed by "6.7.37", n.p., 9¼" x 6½", matted to 14" x 11". Very fine. Lot 533		Sign For Segregated Showers In The U.S. Army. Form #11734, being an official Army sign with arrows pointing to separate showers for "White EM" and "Colored EM." Lot 534		South Korea. Pair of Military Medals to USA Lt. General Sammet, Missile Command. Two Medallic Award Plaques to Colonel and Brigadier General George Sammet, Jr., later Lt. General. 1) Bronze & multi-color enameled 11.75 inch diameter circular medallic plaque to Sammet as Colonel and Commanding Officer of the 4th U.S. Army Missile Command 1963-64 in Korea. The central missile "patch" is surrounded by eight distintive insignia in colored enamel. With reverse hanger. 2) An 11 inch diameter circular bronze medallic plaque for meritorious service with South Korean forces as Brigadier General and Senior Advisor, from Korean Lieutenant General Lee Min Woo, Commanding General 5th ROK Corps. Pair of Viet-Nam Era Military Awards 1st Marine Division. 1) An 11 inch brass medallic plaque from the Korean National War College dated 1967-1968 with naming in Korean at bottom. 2) A silvered and bronzed medal, 4.25" in diameter of the Korean 1st Marine Division, showing a map of the Korean Peninsula with bronze banner above and 1970 dated naming plaque in Korean below, all mounted on a wooden display stand. A group of 4 items from a WW 2 Marine and his family…1) A captured Japanese flag, 32" x 28.5", with four handwritten characters, 2) a large Marine Eagle & Globe insignia in darkened bronze, screwback, 3) a Purple Heart Medal Ribbon Bar with applied Oak Leaf Cluster, and 4) a Mother's Flag with three blue stars for three serving sons. Lot 539		World War II Aerial Reconnaissance Camera. World War II aerial reconnaissance camera used for evaluating and mapping strategic military terrain. This camera is all metal, measuring 11"x 10" and is 14" deep including the length of the lens. Metal and wood handles are situated at the top of the camera and the bottom of the lens. This interesting and historical piece took 7" film and was made by Keystone, a major manufacturer of photographic equipment at the time. Condition is very good. Estimated Value $250 - 300. Lot 542		World War Two "A-Bomb Island" Tinian Trench Art. A pair of candlesticks made from two Japanese 25mm naval anti-aircraft gun shells. Each is about 6.75" high and hand decorated with stippling to produce scenes of a palm tree with the sun setting over the ocean and the phrase "Tinian Island 1945." Each shell with Japanese navy markings at bottom and pierced fuses having been fired at American forces during the invasion of the island. After almost 2000 Marine casualties incurred while securing Tinian, the Seabees transformed it into the largest airport in the world with four runways each 8500 feet long for B-29s attacking Japan. Two of those missions from Tinian ended WW 2 with the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Estimated Value $200 - 300. View details and enlarged photo	Unsold
Lot 543		World War Two Japanese Army Officer's Sword. This Shin-gunto katana of 39 inches overall length has a machine made blade signed "Hisa Michi" and is dated Showa 18 (1943). The blade has areas of heavy stains and pitting and has been extensively cleaned. The brown painted scabbard shows wear and some chipping to the paint and the handle wrap is soiled. The menuki and other fittings with flower design are all present. An evocative artifact of the Pacific Theater with obvious signs of extensive war use. Estimated Value $600 - 800.
