ASTP, 1975, Deke Slayton's Light Gray 1962 "Mercury Seven" 10 Gallon Stetson Hat. This hat is a "TRUE" Stetson with the Stetson name printed in gold on the top of the lining, A "Stetson / Clear Beaver Quality" hand stamp on the sweatband along with the initials "DKS", "Shudde Bros / Houston" and "The Open Road / XXXXXXX / Stetson" alongside. There is a 2003 Bobbie Slayton COA included that reads: "June 29th 1962, NASA closed the doors on its Manned Spacecraft Center operation at Langley Field, Virginia, and on Monday, July 2nd, MSC went to work, full force in Houston. An area-wide welcome for the NASA personnel was held Wednesday, July 4th. It was a family-affair throughout, with top executives of MSC and the astronauts and their families riding in open automobiles through the downtown streets. The parade concluded at the Sam Houston Coliseum, where a barbeque luncheon was served, with 30 serving lines, to 7500 NASA personnel and members of their families. This was followed by a short formal ceremony and a star-studded entertainment program. This hat was presented to Deke Slayton as a "Welcome to Houston" gift by the Houston Chamber of Commerce". A copy of a NASA photo is also included showing the Mercury Seven astronauts, all wearing their Stetson hats and with Sheriff's badges on their lapels (sold in auction some time ago). ASTP, 1975, Deke Slayton's Red-Brown Leather "Chaps". A beautiful pair of thick leather chaps that appear to be in excellent, and well used, condition. There is a black hand stamp inside each leg that reads: "Russ Taylor, 1220 5th St, Cody, Wyoming". These chaps appear to have all the requisite bells and whistles including zippers and fringe on each leg and even a pocket on left leg. We probably wouldn't have run these chaps in the sale, but having belonged to Deke would seem to indicate he wore them extensively on his hunting/fishing trips and may have even worn them on his visit to LBJ's ranch when he was presented with a "Stetson" hat (see elsewhere in this sale). An interesting piece of "space memorabilia.
