Liberty Seated Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 541
1874 Liberty Seated Dime. Arrows. PCGS graded Proof 65. A quintessential Benson coin that boasts electric blue toning forming a crescent moon on the right side, fading to bright yellow gold at the centers over the frosted devices. The reverse similar, with the deep blue enveloping the wreath while the centers are ruby red to violet. Identifiable by a tiny planchet flake above the right side of the wreath, just right of the tip. Die file lines extend from the upper left obverse letters, as made. All 1874 with Arrows coins were struck with smiling arrows, which point upward, instead of the horizontal arrows seen on 1873 dimes. Stunning in every way. PCGS has graded 15 this high, with 9 graded higher.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.
From the Benson collection and purchased from James Macallister on March 31, 1944 as part of a set from 1858 to 1915 for $195.00.

Lot 542
1875 Liberty Seated Dime. PCGS graded Proof 64. Well struck by the dies and superbly toned by decades in the slightly sulfered Wayte Raymond holders. Such colors must be seen to be appreciated, as their vibrancy defies description, and challenges even our superb photographer to capture the subtle nuances of the rainbow. If only all PR-64s could look like this! Throw away the "bid sheets" on this one if you want a chance to capture this prize. PCGS notes 44 graded this high, with 20 graded higher.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

1883 Liberty Seated Dime. PCGS graded Proof 66. Yellow gold in the fields deepens to rich reddish gold through the periphery on this one, the devices highly frosted and also toned. Examination notes the faintest hairlines but no surface marks or other signs of handling, and this coin causes us to wonder how much nicer a higher grade specimen would have to be to earn a PR-67. Quality, an essential in numismatics, is never cheap, and always cherished.
