Lot 323		1796 S-82 R5 Liberty Cap PCGS graded AG3. Slightly glossy olive brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and there are no notable defects, just worn. The lower half of the 1 in the date is worn away but the remainder of the date is clear. Our grade is AG3 for the obverse, Fair-2 for the reverse. Estimate Value $150 - UP Ex Shawn Yancey 2010. Lot 324		1796 S-83 R4 Liberty Cap PCGS Genuine, AU Details, Planchet Flaw. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with reddish brown toning in protected areas on the left side of the wreath. Frosty lighter brown toning shows in protected areas on both sides. The obverse is perfectly smooth except for a shallow planchet delamination void that affects the lower half of the T in LIBERTY down into the hair below. The reverse is mostly smooth but traces of microscopic roughness show around CENT and in the reddish area within the leaves on the left side of the wreath. An attractive cent in spite of the mint-made planchet flaw and microscopic roughness. M-LDS, Breen state II late. A strong die crack reaches from the dentils over the I in LIBERTY through the tops of ERTY and to the rim before the nose, and the crack fills the upper half of the top of that R. The extremely rare large cud break outlined by this crack must have occurred soon after this cent was struck. Graded VF35 net F15 and tied for CC#8 in the Noyes census, his photo #39209. Our grade is VF30+ sharpness net VF20. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label. Lot 325		1796 S-90 R5+ Liberty Cap Fair-2. Rather glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. There are a few small marks including a dull nick in the field close off the end of the chin. Essentially just heavily worn. The 1 in the date is worn away but the rest of the digits are readable. The obverse is slightly sharper than the reverse, which is normal for worn Liberty Cap 1796 cents. Struck with the reverse nearly upset rotated 165 degrees CCW. Estimate Value $300 - UP Ex Henry T. Lot 326		1796 S-108 R4 Draped Bust VG10. Sharpness VF30 but covered with fine to moderate granularity, strongest on the reverse. There are a few minor contact marks hidden in the patina and a planchet delamination over ER in AMERICA that can easily identify this cent. Very slightly glossy dark olive and steel with lighter steel brown toning on some of the highpoints. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks or clashmarks. The date is strong and the legends are clear. What makes this cent special is the planchet. It is thick and weighs 206.9 grains, much heavier than the 168.0 grain standard for 1796 cents. Obviously this planchet was made for cents struck before the weight standard was changed from 208.0 grains to 168.0 grains in mid-1795. According to Walter Breen the 1796 S-108 variety was the first one struck in 1796 and it shares the 1795 S-79 Reeded Edge reverse die. An example of S-108 struck on a thick planchet was unknown to Breen. Apparently he never saw this coin. Removed from an ANACS slab graded VF Details Net F12 for corrosion (ANACS label #2499347 included, and shows the attribution and mentions the thick 13.41 gram planchet). Lot 327		1797 S-120a R3 Reverse of 1796, Plain Edge VG7. Attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and this piece offers excellent eye appeal for the grade. Lot 328		1797 S-120b R3 Reverse of 1796, Gripped Edge VF25. Five points sharper but there are a few minor contact marks on the obverse on an otherwise very attractive early large cent. The notable marks are a dull, curved scratch hidden in the hair left of the ear and a few lighter contact marks in the field before the chin and neck. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown. Mint frost covers the protected areas on both sides and the reverse is choice. LDS, Breen state VI, with all the die cracks and crumbling mentioned by Breen. Lot 329		1797 S-123 R4 VG10. Sharpness near VF20 but there are traces of minor roughness and small contact marks on an otherwise mostly smooth, glossy cent. Glossy olive brown and chocolate with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. The date is bold and the legends are strong. Scarce LDS, Breen state IV, with a clear die crack through the base of the denominator to the dentils over the left side of the adjacent U. Lot 330		Pair of Scarce Varieties, 1797 & 1798. Includes 1797 S-123 R4 G5+ with nice eye appeal, and 1798 S-146 R5- Style I Hair with Large 8 G5 sharpness net AG3+ for microscopic roughness. Lot 331		1797 S-125 R5 G6. Sharpness near VG10 but uniform very fine granularity covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. There is no verdigris, and the fine roughness is offset somewhat by the rather glossy chocolate brown toning. The only mark is a thin diagonal nick in the hair under the E in LIBERTY. MDS, Breen state II, with obvious swelling from the 97 through the bust into the field before the neck and chin. The second 7 is still readable in spite of the swelling, while the rest of the date and all the legends are complete and clear. Lot 332		1797 S-129 R5 PCGS XF Details, Damage. Variety with M over E in AMERICA. Glossy olive brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth, void of any trace of roughness or verdigris. Unfortunately there are two horizontal scratches across the center of the neck and a single scratch from the forehead to the back of the head. The scratches are old and blend into the attractive toning, but they are obvious nonetheless. The only other mark is a rim dent at the L in LIBERTY. LDS, Breen state II, with light die cracks near the rim behind the head. The M over E feature is bold. Our grade is VF25+ sharpness net VG10. Graded VF25 net VG10 by Bland and tied for CC#7 in his census. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Lot 333		1797 S-130 R2 EF40. Sharpness EF45 or slightly better but there are too many light contact marks for the higher grade, including a couple light hairline scratches in the field before the nose. None of the marks is at all distracting and the eye appeal is excellent. Frosty dark bluish steel brown with lighter reddish chocolate brown toning in protected areas of the obverse and a small area of similar reddish toning at the base of the N in CENT. The protected areas are covered with fine die flowlines creating attractive mint luster. LDS, Breen state V. The die cracks down from the dentils left of the hair ribbon are strong and outline a small internal cud break, and there is a weaker vertical die crack in the field before the portrait. Called AU50 net EF40 and tied for CC#10 in the Noyes census, photo #35932. Pop 1; 3 finer, 1 in 53, 1 in 58, 1 in 62. Lot 334		1797 S-136 R3 PCGS graded G4. Glossy chocolate brown and olive. The surfaces are smooth and free of marks, just worn. LDS, Breen state V, with areas of swelling on the reverse. This cent was struck twice and both impressions were reasonably well centered on the planchet. The planchet flipped over between strikes and ample undertype from the first impression remains visible on both sides. Most notably ICA and the fraction from the first strike are clearly visible in the field behind the portrait, and on the reverse you can see ERTY at ITED and the nose, lips, and chin of Ms Liberty at the O in ONE. An impressive example of this very rare type of mint error. Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade. The Mint Error Flip-Over Double Strike in Collar feature is noted on the PCGS label. The surfaces are smooth and the only notable marks are a couple fine scratches hidden in the toning from the hair under the ribbon to the bottom of the neck. Lot 336		1797 S-140 R1 NGC graded VF30. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. No roughness or verdigris. The only notable marks are some faint hairlines in the field before the portrait and a thin horizontal planchet fissure (as struck) in the field left of the hair ribbon. None of these marks is significant and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. EDS, Breen state II. The obverse is uncracked and there are faint die clashmarks on the reverse. Our grade is VF20+. Lot 339		1798 S-149 R4+ Large 8, Style I Hair VG7. Slightly sharper but there is a light scratch arcing through the bust and some dark crud in protected areas below the hair ribbon. Most of the planchet is smooth but there are traces of extremely fine roughness on both sides. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker olive brown in protected areas. LDS, Breen state III, with obvious swelling at S-OF-A. Struck slightly off center to K-8.5. The date is bold and the legends are clear. Lot 340		1798/7 S-150 R5 Overdate 8 over 7 G5. Slightly sharper but there is a dull dent at the bottom of the first A in AMERICA and an old scrape at EN in CENT. The toning is an attractive glossy light chocolate and olive blending to darker chocolate in protected areas. Later die state with obvious swelling at various places on the reverse. Slightly sharper, especially on the obverse, but there are traces of extremely fine roughness on both sides under mostly glossy chocolate and medium steel brown toning. The only notable mark is a nick on the I in LIBERTY. The date is bold and the Single Leaves feature at the top of the wreath (Reverse of 1796) is clear. Lot 342		1798 S-157 R2 Small 8, Style I Hair VF30. Five points sharper but covered with very faint hairlines that are mostly lost in the attractive glossy brown and light chocolate toning. No corrosion or verdigris, and the only other mark is a rim bruise at TE in UNITED. M-LDS, Breen state II, with obvious die rust in the field around the bust and an irregular nearly horizontal die crack from the rim to the neck. Lot 343		1798 S-162 R4 Small 8, Style I Hair VF25. Glossy medium chocolate brown with a splash of reddish brown toning under ERI in AMERICA. The surfaces are smooth and this cent has excellent eye appeal, especially on the obverse. No corrosion or verdigris, only a few small contact marks. The notable ones are a small diagonal nick on the throat and a minor scrape on the dentils over the first A in AMERICA. MDS, Breen state II, with swelling in the obverse fields. Lot 344		1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair EF40. Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Mint frost shows in the protected areas and the eye appeal is excellent. However the strike is obviously uneven (which is often seen on this die variety) with significant weakness on the lower half of the 98 and most of the bust and the opposing area at OF-AM. This is probably due to the unintended 35 degree CCW die rotation rather than the normal head-to-foot die orientation. LDS, Breen state VI. The die crack on the lower left part of the reverse is bold and there are clearly defined rim cud breaks at STA in STATES. Lot 345		1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair ANACS graded EF40. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with some light olive and tan toning on parts of the reverse. No spots, roughness, or notable marks. MDS, Breen state IV. The die crack on the lower left part of the reverse is strong and a tiny rim cud break shows over the left top of the T in STATES (in later states this cud extends over STA). The reverse is rotated about 25 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot orientation. As a result the bust tip, parts of the 98, and OF are all softly struck (which is quite common on this variety). The only notable mark, and it is trivial, is a tiny rim bruise or dull rim nick above the O in OF. Nicely struck E-MDS. The die crack up from the bust is clear. The only mark, and it is extremely well hidden, is a small dent in the hair under the ribbon knot. EDS, Breen state I. The E over Reversed E in AMERICA feature is clear. Lot 348		1798 S-183 R5 Small 8, Style I Hair VF25. Five points sharper but there is a fine, old pinscratch from the bottom of the L in LIBERTY down to the throat. The toning in this scratch perfectly matches the toning on the rest of the cent, so its impact on the eye appeal is minimized. A dull, light rim nick over the second T in STATES is the only other contact mark worthy of mention. Choice glossy chocolate brown with smooth, attractive surfaces. LDS, Breen state II. There are faint double clashmarks on both sides and fine vertical die polishing lines down through LIBERT. Called VF30 and tied for CC#4 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#5, his photo #23019. This is the plate coin for the variety in Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. And it comes with a great provenance. Lot 349		1798 S-185 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VF30. Sharpness EF45 but covered with very fine granularity, strongest on the reverse but not really strong anywhere. No verdigris, and the only marks are a thin horizontal nick on the upper lip and a faint diagonal hairline scratch in the field off the bust tip. Rather glossy dark olive and steel brown. E-MDS, Breen state IV. There are a few fine die cracks at TY but the radial crack through the Y to the forehead has not formed. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW. Lot 350		1799 S-189 R2 PCGS graded F12. Slightly glossy medium steel brown and chocolate with darker chocolate in protected areas and lighter tan on the obverse devices. The surfaces are mostly smooth except for a small, inconspicuous patch of fine corrosion at the bottom of NT in CENT and another in the leaves over the E in ONE. MDS. The date and LIBERTY are both complete and clear, which is a big plus for this tough date since many were struck with one or the other feature noticeably weak due to axially misaligned dies. The surfaces are not perfectly smooth but the gloss effectively minimizes the microscopic granularity. No verdigris, and the only notable mark is an old diagonal scratch hidden in the patina on the neck. The date is strong with the bottom edge of the digits just starting to fade into the rim below. LIBERTY is faint but most of the legends on the reverse are easily readable. Our grade is G4 sharpness net AG3. Sharper by 5 points but there are a few contact marks, including a couple faint hairline scratches in the obverse fields and a rim bruise right of the date. Extremely rare terminal die state (TDS), Breen state VI, with a bold cud break at MER. Only 5 examples are known to us with the cud break, and the last one we offered was the Holmes net VG8 example that brought $9200 in our 9/6 2009 auction. Lot 360		1800 S-210 R5+ G5. Several points sharper but there are myriad light scratches on both sides, all blending into the rather glossy brown and chocolate toning. Unevenly struck and slightly off center with obvious weakness at the bottom of the obverse and top of the reverse. As a result the details range from Fine to AG sharpness, and the date is weak. Lot 361		1800/798 NC-6 R6+ Overdate 800 over 798, Style I Hair G5+. A point or two sharper but there are traces of microscopic roughness on otherwise smooth surfaces. The roughness is most noticeable at OF AMER where there are microscopic traces of greenish verdigris, but it is not distracting. Both sides show some light contact marks, all consistent with the grade. The notable ones are a light rim bruise at the N in UNITED and a dull diagonal nick over the N in ONE. Mostly glossy dark chocolate brown and steel mixed with some lighter chocolate brown on the obverse. The date and legends are complete and clear and the repunching on the base of the F in OF is obvious. In addition the upper edge of the ends of the wreath stems slants down, which is diagnostic for this rare variety. Not perfect but very close to net G6. Graded VG7 net G5 by Noyes and Bland, Noyes photo #28576. Tied for CC#6 honors and only a single example grades better than VG7 among the 16 examples known. Comes with a nice provenance. Lot 362		1800/798 NC-6 R6+ Overdate 800 over 798, Style I Hair AG3. Sharpness VG10 or slightly better but the planchet is covered with moderate granularity and there are a half dozen sharp cuts on the obverse. No verdigris or additional defects. The date and legends are complete and clear. Dark steel and olive brown. Certainly not an attractive cent but one of the better detailed examples known of this very rare variety (16 examples known, and most of those are in very low grade). Lot 363		1801 S-214 R3 F15. Sharpness VF20 or slightly better but there is a scuff of very light diagonal hairline scratches in the field before the face. None of these marks is visible to the unaided eye and this cent offers excellent eye appeal for the grade. Glossy olive brown and medium chocolate. M-LDS, Breen state II, with a bit of swelling in the field near the dentils over the bust tip. The die cracks on the reverse are clear and both sides show die clashmarks. Lot 365		1801 S-221 R2 Corrected Denominator 100/000 VF35. Very attractive glossy uniform medium brown and light chocolate. This cent was cleaned and expertly retoned long ago but the color is superb and the eye appeal is outstanding. No notable marks or other defects. M-LDS, Breen state IV early, with clearly defined rim cud breaks at F-A and M but none over the adjacent E (an intermediate die state not mentioned by Breen). Lot 366		1802 S-225 R3 VG10. Slightly sharper but there is an area of microscopic roughness around the hair ribbon and a few more on the reverse, plus an old pinscratch at ERT in LIBERTY. Lot 368		1802 S-232 R1 PCGS graded AU55. Lustrous light chocolate and steel brown with traces of very faded mint color showing in a couple protected places. Looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of the devices. The only mark is a spot of darker toning in the field over the bust, and there are microscopic traces of carbon in the spot. MDS, Breen state IV, with die clashmarks on both sides. The T over Y feature in LIBERTY is obvious. Our grade is AU55, same as the PCGS grade. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. (NGC label #4216241-001 included). Lot 370		1802 S-236 R1 PCGS graded VG8. Mostly glossy light chocolate brown with darker chocolate toning in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and show only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. The notable marks are a few old pin scratches through the E in UNITED. LDS, Breen state VIII, with a cud break at STA. Struck 60% off center to K-4 leaving all of the date off the planchet. An impressive mint error. Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade. Lot 372		1802 NC-1 R5+ G6. Sharpness F15 but lightly corroded and there are traces of greenish verdigris in protected areas on the obverse. The only notable contact marks are a series of light rim bruises around most of the coin. The date and legends are complete and clear, and the diagnostic spike down from the bust right of the date is obvious. Slightly glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter chocolate on the devices.
