1921 Alabama Half Dollar, With 2 x 2. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ CAC Approved. A lovely frosty white coin. Lustrous but deep white frostiness dominates the surfaces of this beautiful Commemorative coin, with a particular glow to the reverse fields. One would be hard put to add more about the mint bloom. As for the strike, this Alabama was struck with technical exactness throughout. Both portraits show intricate detail. The small 2x4 was used by the promoters as a marketing tool in the hopes that buyers would want to own both varieties, with and without. As it is, since many Alabamas were put into circulation after sales lagged, the plan seems to have been futile. Not so is it futile to obtain an MS66 example, just very, very difficult (notice the low population). A superlative coin for a specialized collection where top-quality is a prerequisite. Pop 83; 9 finer (PCGS # 9225) .
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,200.

1937 Antietam Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ CAC Approved. Lovely obverse toning, a vibrant gem superior to most in this stellar condition. The Battle of Antietam (known as the Battle of Sharpsburg in the South), Sept. 17, 1862, is considered the bloodiest single day in the Civil War. To pay homage to the 75th anniversary of this battle, designer and sculptor William Marks Simpson depicted conjoined busts of the two generals who commanded the opposing forces in that battle, George B. McClellan (Union) and Robert E. Lee (Confederate). For the reverse, Simpson recreated the Burnside Bridge which was a strategic site in the battle. A total of 50,000 were authorized at $1.65 each, although only 18,000 were eventually sold, the remainder being melted (PCGS # 9229) .
Estimated Value $700 - 750.

1936-D Cincinnati Music Center Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. CAC Approved. Lovely light toning. These received a large amount of speculative interest leading up to their release. By the time sales were held, the price had risen to $15 per coin (an unheard of premium for a 1930s era commemorative half dollar). But the boom faded by 1937 and prices declined to more favorable levels for those who weren't able to acquire specimens at the time of release. Always a popular, low-mintage item for the Commemorative buyer. Pop 308; 54 finer (PCGS # 9284) .
Estimated Value $550 - 600.

1922 Grant Half Dollar, No Star. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ CAC Approved. Frosty with a hint of tone. Bold portrait of Ulysses S Grant.

A bit of trivia for those who revel in such: Ulysses S. Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant. At Ulysses' birth, his family had not decided on what to name him. Eventually, each member of the family wrote a name on a slip of paper and dropped it into a hat. They drew the name Hiram Ulysses Grant from the hat, and that became his name. He was known as Ulysses to his family and friends.

Ulysses attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. When Ulysses registered, his name appeared on West Point's records as Ulysses Simpson Grant, rather than Hiram Ulysses Grant. So, Ulysses changed his name to Ulysses Simpson Grant. He was known as U.S. Grant or "Uncle Sam" Grant. His good friends shortened this name and called him Sam (PCGS # 9306) .

1915-S Panama-Pacific Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. CAC Approved. Light gold toning, and a scintillating Gem displaying all the finer detail. The Panama-Pacific Half Dollar was conceived by Charles E. Barber, one of the mint's engravers. It features Liberty and a child on the obverse. Liberty is holding two sprigs of flowers while behind, the sun sets between the southern and northern outcroppings of the Golden Gate, entrance to San Francisco Bay. Barber placed a wingspread eagle on the reverse, having it stand atop the union shield rather than the shield superimposed on its breast as was the form up till then. In all, 27,314 were sold out of an original authorized mintage of 60,000. The unsold pieces were remelted (PCGS # 9357) .
