Lot 853
Judaea, Yehud (Judah). Hezekiah. Silver 1/4 Ma'ah Obol (0.18 g), ca. 333/2-302/1 BCE. Indistinct, but probably a facing head within circular border. Rev. 'HPHH YHZQYH' (Yehezqio the governor - Hezekiah), owl standing right, head facing; in lower right field, Greek letter A. Cf. TJC 22 (without Greek A); cf. Hendin 1069 (same). Toned. Fair / Extremely Fine. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
Struck to the Attic standard favored for the coinages of Alexander the Great, the reverse type depicts the Athenian owl, partly to signal the use of the Attic weight standard but also looking back to the traditions of the Yehud coinage of the Persian period. The abandonment of the former Persic standard has led to the conclusion that the type postdates the Macedonian conquest of Judaea. The coins of the Macedonian period also give Hezekiah his official title as ha pecha, the governor.
From the S. Moussaieff Collection, This lot has been officially exported from Israel through the Israel Antiquities Authority.

Hendin 1134; TJC grp. C. Dark brown patina. Rare. Choice Very Fine. Estimated Value $200 - 250
It is unclear whether the palm branch on this coin should be interpreted as a Jewish ritual object or as an emblem celebrating one or more of John Hyrcanus' many victories over the Seleukids and other neighboring peoples who were opposed to increasing Hasmonean power in the region. The lily on the reverse serves as the emblem of Jerusalem and perhaps a cipher for John Hyrcanus I himself.

Although struck by the Jewish rebels against Rome, the the prutot of the Jewish War take much of their typological inspiration from the earlier coinages struck for Judaea by the Roman praetorial government. The amphora and vine leaf types come very close to those used for an issue of Valerius Gratus in 17/8 CE.

The Temple Tax was required of Jewish males over age 20, and the money was used for the upkeep and maintenance of the temple. In Exodus 30:13-16, God told Moses to collect this tax at the time of the census taken in the wilderness. In 2 Kings 12:5-17 and Nehemiah 10:32-33, it seems the Temple Tax was paid annually, not just during a census. This half-shekel tax wasn't a large sum of money, but roughly equivalent to two days' wages. Before the First Revolt, the Temple Tax could only be paid using Shekels or Half Shekels of Tyre. During the First Revolt, Judaean coins were used to pay the Temple Tax for the first time.

Estimated Value $4,000 - UP
The undated sela'im were struck in the third and final year (134/5 CE) of the Bar Kokhba war, and although the types of the Temple and the lulav and etrog are continued, the coins are no longer dated "year 1" or "year 2 of the redemption of Israel" but instead carry the slogan "for the freedom of Jerusalem" on the reverse. The name of the holy city of Jerusalem no longer appears around the Temple (perhaps suggesting it was now out of reach) and is replaced by Bar Kokhba's first name Simon. The messianic vision was being shattered, and the coins convey this message in their own cryptic way.
