Lot 1991
1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Wire Rim. PCGS graded MS-61. Well struck with light golden toning. Some minor surface hairlines and marks. This has a pale gold sheen, both sides display the boldness of definition that explains the unflagging reputation this first-year issue has earned. A few deeper marks on the eagle and its wings are normal abrasions found on gold Double Eagles, and account for the MS61 designation. We stress, however, that the eye appeal is still operative for the Brilliant Uncirculated grade level. America’s premier coin design (PCGS # 9135) .
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.

Lot 1993
1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Flat Rim PCGS graded Genuine AU Details. A nice looking example of this popular coin. Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the elegant Double Eagle named after him that made its debut in 1907. However, failing health precluded him from taking an active part in the leading up to final production. That credit goes to Mint Engraver Charles E. Barber, who had been on the staff since 1877. This very sharply struck representative displays only a few well scattered abrasions and cleaning signs that are pretty much excluded from the focal areas of the design. Replete with golden color, both sides are fully brought up throughout (PCGS # 9136) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,000.

Lot 1994
1909-D. PCGS graded MS-64. Frosty and untoned. Only 52,500 minted. This date was once widely considered a major rarity in Mint condition, but the emergence of a Central American hoard in 1983 has made the '09-D generally available in grades up to and including the MS63 level. Choice MS64 and finer grades, however, remind us this issue continues to be very elusive. Softly frosted with pleasing cartwheel effects, the surfaces are tinged in bright reddish-gold hues. Both sides are well produced with sharp definition and freedom from all but a few, mostly small abrasions. Mention is made of a few little blemishes on Liberty, a minor scratch in the field by the branch end; the eagle is especially choice here and free from all but the most minor luster scuffs. Very scarce grade. Pop 151; 30 finer (PCGS # 9152) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,000.

Lot 1996
1910-D. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice example with light gold toning and a Gem. A boldly original gold-surfaced coin whose high-end depth of detail in the strike complements the equally fresh mint bloom. Unlike the general run of pieces of this caliber, the strike is thoroughly convincing in all places, even where some weakness might be found at Liberty's upper body and in the eagle's chest feathers (PCGS # 9155) .

1911. PCGS graded MS-64. Lightly toned. Sleek warm yellow gold in color seesaws with an occasional hint of pinkish brilliance. Something perhaps worth adding to the smooth finish on this 1911 Saint is how desirable this coin is with a precision strike on all devices. Philadelphia Mint at its finest! Pop 424; 67 finer (PCGS # 9157) .

Lot 1998
1911-D. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice frosty coin. Strong metal flow augments the already showy golden mint luster that covers the surfaces, giving the coin a brand new, cartwheel appearance. The mint brilliance is nowhere touched by toning. A rounded impression is the rule for some dates in this series, but everything imprinted by the stamp of the dies that struck this date is in bold relief; we are happy to say that the present example is a grand example of the date and grade, being very sharp throughout including centers (PCGS # 9158) .
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,100.

1911-S. NGC graded MS-64+ PQ. CAC Approved. This coin exudes tremendous originality and is quite choice. Taking in to account the considerable price jump from MS64 to MS65, this fresh example warrants a significant premium. Soothing golden tones blanket both sides beautifully (PCGS # 9159) .

1913. PCGS graded MS-64. Frosty and lightly toned. Scarce lower mintage year. This conditionally rare MS64 contribution to the sale is brilliant with rich frosty gold surfaces. Impressive too is the strike, which we find is free of censure, being sharp in all areas. Even though the luster is which draws your attention, in the end, it is also this coin's detail that one appreciates the most: devices foursquare and bold throughout. Pop 313; 20 finer, 9 in 64+, 11 in 65 (PCGS # 9161) .

1913. NGC graded MS-64. Frosty with lovely golden tone. Scarce date. Outstanding quality for this low mintage issue. Each side has a bright reddish-gold center that is surrounded by a wide margin of pale yellow-gold color As far as the strike goes, putting the results in a few words we can say it was struck with the expected exactness throughout, a typical Philadelphia Mint coin. Pop 186; 22 finer, 3 in 64+, 18 in 65, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 9161) .

1913-S. PCGS graded AU-53. Evenly toned. Scarcer date. Only 34,000 struck. This would be a key date for any lower denomination series. Yet in AU53, our estimate places this at close to gold melt value. How sad. After commission, perhaps slightly over melt. After sales tax and shipping costs, if any, a smidgen more. Compare to a 1901-S Barber Quarter. Twice the mintage of this 1913-S $20. In AU53, the ’01-S is scads higher-priced. Because there are far more Barber Quarter collectors than Double Eagle Collectors. This $20 seems to be the better bargain if you like true low mintage, elusive coins that few others could own. Sell your one-ounce Maple Leaf and a quarter-ounce Krugerrand, then sink the proceeds into this instead. Almost as much fine gold, plus a whole lot of history and rarity combined (PCGS # 9163) .

1925-S. NGC graded MS-61. Mostly untoned and frosty. Well struck and lustrous for the issue. The 1925-S is similar in condition rarity to the 1924-S and 1926-D, but it is clearly not the unconditional rarity that the '26-D is. The 1925-S, like the '26-D, was never found in overseas holdings of Double Eagles as were other mintmarked dates in the 1920s, explaining in great part why these two issues are so rare (PCGS # 9182) .

Lot 2014
1926-D. PCGS graded MS-62. Nice golden toning. The attractive golden color competes with reddish gold subtleties for your attention; the surfaces exhibit a few normal field abrasions. Unlike some that are unevenly made, this ’26-D example sports eye-opening sharp striking definition. All minute detail fully evident in Liberty’s gown folds and hair and on the eagle where all breast feathers show. This is the only Denver Minted gold coin struck in 1926. All other denominations were made at either Philadelphia or San Francisco.

Among Saint-Gaudens double eagles the 1926-D is one of the more elusive of its era. In the context of the 1920s production figures, that for the 1926-D was considered small, just 481,000 pieces. It is likely that few were distributed to the public, perhaps 1,000 or so. Most were retained by banks or held in the Treasury vault for Gold Certificate backing. When the gold seizure took place in 1933, the majority of this issue was sent back to the Mint for melting in the mid to late 1930s. Today, the population is likely in the range of 300 to 450 pieces, making it a rarity. Years ago, just a handful were known, and much ink was spilled on extolling the fame of the Extra Rare 1926-D. Catalogs from the late 1940s and early 1950s are worth reading in this regard, since they transmit an appreciation for the Saint-Gaudens series back then, not only the 1926-D but for other rare dates as well. Pop 50; 86 finer (PCGS # 9184) .
Estimated Value $16,000 - 17,000.
